I bought some coleus cuttings on line. One of them had no leaves leaves on the stem, and there are no roots on the stem. If I put that cutting in water will it still root and grow new leaves? I also bought a small potted coleus (a 2x2" pot). All the leaves were off that stem. Will it produce new leaves? Thanks for your input!!!

As long as they are cut fresh and sent the same or next day… over night…should be good…recut the bottom of the stem…place cuttings in water at last 2 leaf nodes in water they should start roots in a week or so. Coleus are the easiest plants to over winter from cuttings.
Were the cuttings labeled… there are so many beautiful leaf's . Which one's did you order? From?
Did directions come with them or guaranteed to be fresh cuts?
Good luck. Keep us posted.

Are you able to add some pics of what you're dealing with?

I ordered the cuttings from Coleuscreative on Etsy. I didn't get directions with them, but I think she has them on her shop page, and she was very good about answering some questions I had.
The cuttings were labeled, though some just had a color name, like 'brightest orange gold'. This was my second order from her--I got Inferno, Vino, Dragon Heart, Lime Shrimp, Dragon Tongue, Trailing Plum and Color Clouds Copper. Almost all of them had roots on them, which I wasn't expecting. I just put them in water till I get around to potting them up. She wraps them carefully, putting the rooted end in a small plastic bag with moistened spagnum peat moss; then she wrapped each cutting separately with brown paper. She sent them priority mail, so it took 2 or 3 days to get to me. When I placed my first order back in Sept., some of the unrooted cuttings looked a little wilty, but after a few days in water, they perked up just fine, and they are looking good at this time. There ARE so many pretty, colorful, varieties of coleus!! This is the first time I am growing them in the house over the winter. I thought it would be so nice to enjoy their beauty indoors during those months when there is nothing to see in my garden. I'm hoping I can keep them alive all winter without a lot of trouble!

No Tiffany, I don't know how to post pictures. I did a few daylily pictures quite some time ago and can't remember how it was done!

@ pinkruffles from your description of how the cutting were packed and how they arrived sounds like they will be a special garden gift for the next spring season.
Your choices for coleus cuttings will have a magnificent show next season.
Hope you keep in touch next spring to show the beautiful coleus you grew from cuttings.
Now that the discovery to purchase coleus cuttings of so many varieties is out… I have checked it out …several online sell them and now I wish I didn't look cause as much as I try to resist I can't resist buying a few. So thanx for that… Rolling on the floor laughing

Agree, this sounds very promising! There is a Coleus forum on here if you'd like to read more inspirational stories about cuttings and lots of various exploits saving them over winter. Some people have great results with seeds too.

Are you using a phone or computer? Somebody should be able to give you directions for adding a pic if you're interested, it's not required. If you are interested, you'll probably figure it out on your own if you click the "Choose File" button. That should be the first step on any device.
