Bea said-As long as they are cut fresh and sent the same or next day… over night…should be good…recut the bottom of the stem…place cuttings in water at last 2 leaf nodes in water they should start roots in a week or so. Coleus are the easiest plants to over winter from cuttings.
Were the cuttings labeled… there are so many beautiful leaf's . Which one's did you order? From?
Did directions come with them or guaranteed to be fresh cuts?
Good luck. Keep us posted.
I ordered the cuttings from Coleuscreative on Etsy. I didn't get directions with them, but I think she has them on her shop page, and she was very good about answering some questions I had.
The cuttings were labeled, though some just had a color name, like 'brightest orange gold'. This was my second order from her--I got Inferno, Vino, Dragon Heart, Lime Shrimp, Dragon Tongue, Trailing Plum and Color Clouds Copper. Almost all of them had roots on them, which I wasn't expecting. I just put them in water till I get around to potting them up. She wraps them carefully, putting the rooted end in a small plastic bag with moistened spagnum peat moss; then she wrapped each cutting separately with brown paper. She sent them priority mail, so it took 2 or 3 days to get to me. When I placed my first order back in Sept., some of the unrooted cuttings looked a little wilty, but after a few days in water, they perked up just fine, and they are looking good at this time. There ARE so many pretty, colorful, varieties of coleus!! This is the first time I am growing them in the house over the winter. I thought it would be so nice to enjoy their beauty indoors during those months when there is nothing to see in my garden. I'm hoping I can keep them alive all winter without a lot of trouble!
