Long Living Perennials for Shade

By daylily
June 19, 2013

Twenty-seven years ago I planted my first perennials, shrubs, and trees around the Ohio home where I currently live. The natural soil is heavy, poorly draining clay that is almost impossible to dig into, so I have added a lot of organic matter to the perennial beds. We have summer temperatures up to 105 and winter temperatures of -25. Years with little rain, and years with lots of rain. This area was once considered zone 5, but the latest update now has it as zone 6. I've grown many perennials through the years. Many grew one or two seasons and then never appeared again. Some were plagued with insect or disease problems that I didn't want to deal with. A few had no problem surviving - I had a problem with them spreading or setting seed that grew everywhere.

Daylily: I really enjoyed reading about the beautiful plants that grow in your garden and your photo's have me drooling! I've never grown Hosta's and have never seen pretty specimens down here .... yours are gorgeous. I really love the looks of the Ligularia (beautiful foliage!) and the Japanese Painted Ferns are really pretty too. Thanks so much for your nice article and giving us a peek into your lovely garden. Great Growing! Thumbs up

I agree with Lin. And I only wish I had shade so I could grow some pretties like yours.
I am a strong believer in the simple fact is that what matters in this life is how we treat others. I think that's what living is all about. Not what I've done in my life but how I've treated others. ~~ Sharon Brown

Thanks! Although I do love daylilies, and many other sun loving perennials - the variety of foliage and range of bloom of the shade plants draws me in every time. I have a small garden, but some of these plants have been with me a long, long time.

Absolutely beautiful! What cultivar is that bright yellow hosta? I have a few hostas as they don't like my intense sun here and I am more of a xeric gardener.. but I would make an exception for that yellow hosta!!

Unfortunately, back when I was adding many of these plants, I didn't keep track of cultivar names, and if I did, tags were lost through the years. Others are selected seedlings of friends who hybridize. So, I am not sure on most of them. I will check tomorrow to see if it is one that does have a tag.

I took the photo this spring. The foliage looked so pretty coming up!

Skiekitty - I did not find a tag on the hosta - but it's pretty good size, and there might be a tag down under there. Some of the hosta I have are seedlings of two different friends - but most of them I bought at one local nursery. I found an old catalog of theirs, and from that list, I have two possible names. I remember buying both of them. Keep in mind, in the photo it was just emerging for the year and it also was lit by a spot of sunlight coming through the tree it's planted under. It's a very light yellow green with a darker edge - but it's not really "yellow"

I think it is either Old Glory or On Stage - but can't be sure unless I find a tag down under it. I remember buying both of them. And then, it may be something completely different. I didn't make permanent tags for many of my plants, and it bothers me that I don't know for sure what cultivars they are.

Here is another view of it on a cloudy day, a little later in the year. You can see the leaves better.

Juli - Still beautiful! I love it!! I have a shade corner on the north side of my house right next to my front door & I have hostas, columbines, coralbells, tradescantia "Sweet Kate", & something else I have no idea what it is in it. Thinking about getting a few more hostas to fill it in as I can't seem to keep coral bells alive. Thumbs down

Juli - No, it's definitely not a poppy. I'll have to take a picture of it so I can get it identified. I bought it 4 years ago & it does come back every year, but is just a little bitty plant. Here's a kinda picture of it (highlighted in red) Produces teeny little yellow flowers, pretty tolerant of drought.

I had the wrong plant in your picture. The one in the red box does not look familiar to me.
