What geraniums are you thinking of trying?

I would love to try some of the dark leaved geraniums. Midnight Reiter and Dark Reiter look really pretty. I tried Victor Reiter a couple of years ago, but he didn't come back!

Has anyone had any experience with any of the 'Reiter' geraniums?

I have tried one of the Reiter geraniums , while it made it through the winter each year it was smaller and this year I could not find it.
I think I would try again but they don't seem to be offering it any where around here. The leaf color was nice and while the blooms were small they were a nice color contrast.
When my computer is back up I will try to find a photo.

Deb, I got some Reiters last year from Edelwiess Perennials in Oregon. Very nice selection, good sized plants, excellent service. Try them. They all survived our crazy buried under 5' of snow winter. (We never have a snow cover) http://www.edelweissperennials...

They've got some cultivars I haven't seen before. I really like Salome! I'll have to go through their online catalog and put an order together.

Deb, What is your zone? What part of the country are you in?

I'm in the suburbs of Chicago. So, zone wise, I would think what does well in your area, should do OK, here. I am in zone 5 I believe.

Deb, It's a fair bit warmer here. Not in all parts of Pa. Most southern parts of Pa are zone 6b, with some of the mountain areas out near Pittsburgh being 6B. The higher elevations and more northern parts, especially up around Lake Erie are zone 6a & in some areas zone 5b.

I'm in a suburb of Philadelphia which sits on one of the Atlantic Ocean bays, the Delaware Bay. We have a big maritime influence so we are the warmest spot in Pa.

That's understandable. I was just figuring that PA is about as far north as IL, so I thought they would be approx the same zone. I didn't really think about the effects of the mountains, or the ocean. Truthfully, I didn't realize that the Atlantic even touched PA. I guess I need to brush up on my geography!!

If you're that much warmer, that could be why the Reiter's do well by you. I was told I was pushing the zone with them here, and they did better in warmer climes.

Deb, I remember having some discussion with Jo Ann/GE on DG about the Reiters JoAnn lives up in the frigid area of Rochester, New York on Lake Erie. She does very well with the Reiters. She does have season long snow cover.

Maybe the snow cover has something to do with it, too. Sometimes we have the snow cover, but a lot of winters we don't. So there isn't that insulation against the cold. I do love the Reiter's, though, and will try them again. (Especially if I can find some at the local nurseries, that are starting to mark down their perennials!!).

Deb, They are not so easy to find, at least not around here.

There are a couple of nurseries that I usually go, where I have found them in the past. I haven't been there recently, because I've been trying to save some money, and I always spend way too much.

I hear you Deb. I think we have all been in that boat recently. I'm going to try to look around in your cubit some more later today. So far, I like what I see.
