I don't think this is the Hosta that went with the label.

Yep not a Hosta

It is not even a Monocot, the leaves are of Dicots

There are bracts covering buds in that photo, I believe it is Aucuba japonica especially the 'MonHinsuru' variety.

the one that is similar is Aucuba japonica 'Night and Day' but the leaves a bit narrower compares to MonHinsuru

ETA; adding the database pict of Aucuba "Night and Day"

The image from the above misplaced photo, bud partially opened, with bract in red circle

it was the sign closest to the plant...but it is certainly quite possible that i took a photograph of the wrong sign or that the sign was incorrect...in either case, how do i rectify the error??

It happens sometimes
my suspect is that the actual Hosta is died down for some reason slug or other pest or just dormant. Hosta and Aucuba are great shady plants, it is not rare that in many garden they are planted in combo at the same spot. they are complementary, the Aucuba will provide interest while Hosta goes dormant, since they are evergreen

To move a photo You could click the image and scroll down

click the "Move this image to another plant" it will lead to another page. then just fill in the blank box with Aucuba japonica, or use "search" icon.
Since there is no Aucuba japonica Mon Hinsuru entry yet on this site, I think the general Aucuba japonica entry will just great. The admin will then approve the moving suggestion later
