Anyone know what these are? I believe this is on a two-year old Fuji persimmon tree that is not doing so well. The gophers love the roots of this particular tree.

Looks like Nectria canker. UC IPM says it usually doesn't kill trees unless they're really stressed. You can spray with fixed copper or Bordeaux mix to prevent new infections. The only 'cure' is removal of diseased branches.
