Pony tail palm top broken off, can i get this to grow roots? And how. About a 15 yr old plant. Was about 12 ft now 10ft. I have broken it off for the past 5 years or so on accident, but never this bad. How can i propogate the top? Have it sitting in a fountain since i broke it moving it out of the garage after a freeze in South Georgia.

Between the split down the middle and the very short stem on the broken piece, I don't think you will get much out of that. The cutting needs to be pretty solid on the bottom, and the crack will tend to invite rot into the center of the stem. It looks like you would not be able to cut above that point, so you're kind of stuck with it.

Normally you would let it dry out and heal, then pot it up in fast draining soil in a smallish container to root. It would need a lot of light to get a good start (making this the wrong time of year for best results). Very important to exercise restraint with the water up front (months) so it doesn't rot.

Thank you for the advice. I may try to cut out most of the crack and see if a miracle will happen. Do you know how cold hardy pony tail palms are? I usually move it off of my back porch if a freeze is inbound.

For a mature plant, about 30*. For that cutting, about 60* and warmer is better.

Right, CalPolygardener. How cold hardy a plant is doesn't really help in this case when one is trying to propagate. Cold weather, even if it will not damage the plant, will usually prevent rooting.
