I have three-year-old asparagus plants that have not started to grow yet. I am moving in June and would like to take my asparagus with me. Is this possible and if so, how?
I don't know how to reply to your answers. I can't figure it out.
When I say they haven't started to grow yet I mean the shoots haven't come through the dirt

It is possible.

I have transplanted asparagus with good success. It sets them back a little but if you don't damage the crowns, and preserve as much root mass as you can, it should work out.

Asparagus plants seem to "move" over time, and to sport new offshoots. A stand can get quite dense over time.

As @greenriverfs says you can transplant them. But I'm wondering what you mean by "plants that have not started to grow yet". Can you explain more?

I bet they haven't sprouted yet, this year.
Seems a three year old plant that hasn't started "to grow yet" is probably toast by now.

@kdespres, scroll down the page, past the big pink square of writing. Then there is a green band that says "Post a reply to Ask a Question forum: Asparagus."

Below that is a big empty box with a blue line around it. Type your return messages in the box, add photos with the "choose file", check in "Preview" (if you want) then hit "Finished." You will be taken out of this thread but can go back with "return to thread" option.

Conway - thats Atlanta area, we here in the south plant asparagus in Feb. I just cut my tops off, this is the time to dig the crowns up - or plant them. As far as keeping them until June when you move, well, I would wait til you are ready to move to dig them. Dig your hole wider than where the shoots come up, and deeper so as not to cut into the roots. Give them the rest of the year to settle into their new home before harvesting them.
So many roads to take, choices to make, and laughs to share!

I agree that the asparagus may be dead. There should have been some signs of growth on the soil surface at three years after planting. May I suggest digging up one clump of roots and seeing if the roots are all hollow and dried out.

The asparagus has been growing well for 2 years, it just hasn't started to send up shoots yet this year

Thanks for clarifying (I am sighing in relief because that's what I thought you meant and I didn't want to butt in later. Smiling ))
My garden is a little cooler than yours, I expect. My asparagus starts to emerge in April, I think.
What is your window for being able to move it? Only around move time? If so, I think I would let all the stalks grow until time to move, then cut them off, dig, move it.

I'm not sure the work will be worth it. And you'll be pretty busy at moving time. But Crossing Fingers! Crossing Fingers! Crossing Fingers!

Doing it right now, I think is better, if possible.
Plant it and they will come.
