It seems to makes sense to me to add a little compsot to 5-1-1 mix for nutritional value. Am I over thinking things?

Not for indoor plants. Compost will break down and clog the air spaces. I believe that blend is designed with the assumption you'll be fertilizing regularly. The person who promoted that mix hasn't been around here for awhile. You might find him or his followers on Houzz or Reddit.
