I am planning on moving from Texas to Georgia, and just wondering if y'all have any advice for planting there. Smiling

Also, (not to direct you to another platform, but as an additional resource), I'm in the Facebook group Gardening in Georgia, if you're on Facebook. I tip my hat to you.

@Flowerlover6 Which city in Georgia are you moving to? If in south Georgia, near Valdosta, gardening may be similar to your zone 8b garden. I live an hour north of Atlanta in the Appalachian foothills, and am in zone 8a (used to be zoned as 7b). There is quite a diversity in gardening from the north to the south of the state. Perhaps a key difference from Texas to Georgia is that Georgia has more humidity. We get 65-75 inches of rain a year, so except for intermittent droughts, it is muggy throughout the growing season, which translates to disease and insects. Also, we have lots of 4-legged pests to deal with, with raccoons, rabbits, and deer being some of the most destructive. Looking forward to hearing where you are moving to.

Are you in a moist climate in E TX, or west where it is more dry? If you are more to the east, you might not notice much difference. Are you planning to bring any of your current plants with you?

@LoriMT @purpleinopp I live in the middle of central Texas, and currently it is so dry and the sun feels like it wants to kill you, lol. i am planning on moving to northwestern Georgia near Chattanooga , which is in the foothills of the Appalachian mountains. I probably cannot bring any plants, but i will bring all my seeds.

That will definitely be different! I hope it goes well : ) Not similar to where I am, which is more like where you are now than N GA, so I can't offer any pre-advice but wish you the best!

There are a number of folks in Northern GA in that facebook group (again, not to direct to another source, but as an additional one to this site). Big Grin I'm in central GA so I really don't know much about the cold temps they get in further North GA. Sighing!

@Flowerlover6 The area in northwest Georgia south of Chattanooga is quite beautiful and lush with forest-covered baby mountains (foothills). The keys to planting will be to pay attention to last frost date in spring (perhaps around May 1), and first frost date in autumn (perhaps around Oct 1). Once you know your zip code, you can type it into the garden planner here on Garden.org and it will give you ideas of planting dates. The area you are moving to is very wet and humid, so you will be battling diseases and bugs. The local gardeners in the area can give you some ideas about tactics, and also you can reach out on the various forums here for suggestions (i.e. tomato forum, daylily forum, etc). I also encourage you to visit botanical gardens in the area to see what plantings work for them. Here is a link to the calendar: https://garden.org/apps/calend...

I think battling diseases and bugs is something we do in my neck of the woods too. Hilarious!

Nooga is going to be a very different experience...
It's different from here too...

Seems like you'll see some rocks...
A lot more rain and cooler temps...

What seeds are you planning on bringing?

You will probably find that vegetable gardening just got a whole lot easier... but any of the perennials that you are used to? probably be difficult to grow.

Edit:
I just checked your pictures...
I'm not sure how you are able to grow those in central tx... I think those will be a lot easier to grow near nooga too.
