If there ever is confusion concerning plant products, interpreting the labeling of sphagnum moss and peat moss is high on the list.

Thread OP

Here in the UK, it is almost impossible to get peat moss based composts due to the ban on it as an additive in composts. The alternatives are very hit and miss, to be honest, and quite inconsistent, even in the same brand!

What in the world is the rational for a ban on peat in the UK, @lilwead? This certainly isn't a scarce product. We can purchase bales of it in many 1000's of locations in the US, and I have a feeling that practically all of our bagged potting soils have a peat component.

The reason it's so hard to lose weight when you get up in age is because your body and your fat have become good friends.

I consider that information, @JoyF as purely "climate activists' propaganda". England and the rest of Western Europe can publish what they please, and people can believe what they wish. Is Canada also going to bane peat usage? How about Australia? I think that both Canada and Australia supplies a good bit of peat. Climate change is certainly real, and the earth's climate has been in constant change for millions of years. Man can change the climate in specific locales (such as the elimination of a lot of the smog that is common with large population/automobile areas). But changing the world's climate is an entirely different matter. Personally, I don't believe that it's possible to do so.

Dale, I did read it, but have seen this stuff before, in all kinds of forms. In my opinion, these are nothing but op-eds, not really science. I personally don't use peat, but not for any of these "save the planet" reasons. The peat issue is simply another of the issues that has been argued for many decades. America has always had the climate radicals (meat haters, tree huggers, petroleum activists, etc.). Radicalism, in many forms and with many labels, will always be with us.

I'm done with this. I'll offer nothing more. Have a great life.
