I have the Red Firespike growing in my yard here in Florida and I have seen Ruby-throated Hummingbirds visiting the flowers on occasion but the plant they seem to prefer much more is Odontonema tubaeforme (synonym Odontonema strictum). Firespike (Odontonema tubaeforme) which grows in zones 9 and 10, including California. https://www.californiagardens....
This California Native Plant Society webpage should offer help; it has a list of California Native Plants that attract Hummingbirds: https://www.cnps-scv.org/index...
