I like to use paper pots for all Squash, Cucumber and Gourd seedlings since they don't love their roots being fussed with. Very few of us get newspapers any more but I'd hung on to my over-100 page voter info pamphlet from the primaries and mine is the perfect size. Just remove the staples and open it up and it's the same size has a half newspaper sheet. I place the paper pots in a nursery tray until planting and for easier watering. Any type of saucer would do for just a few. I wouldn't try to grow anything in them for much longer than a month or so.

I'm not all that concerned with the small amount of ink or anything used to process the paper as it's only one newspaper half page per pot. Oregon is often at the forefront of care for the environment and their position is this (it's fine): https://extension.oregonstate.....

I've used this particular YouTube video for making the pots for years now. Doing it today so thought I'd share. They break down and incorporate into the soil so much easier than peat pots and other alternatives.

If you've ever made paper pirate hats, this is similar. The only place to get hung up is when he's folding the second side tabs. Just enclose the tabs - not the angled bit of paper. Otherwise it's straightforward.

Remember, it is dangerous to the environment and ILLEGAL in MANY states (CA is one) to mail plants/bulbs/cuttings in. Let’s all practice Do No Harm while we walk this earth and find other ways to connect to one another through gardening.

Nice, I've wanted to try this. Thanks for sharing.

Another good move is to save your toilet paper tubes and use those to get plants started.

I'll try to note how they look after a month - I think a lot of folks use them for plants that take 6 to 8 weeks before planting. I just never have. I've heard of the TP paper but think it lasts too long like peat pots. I've cut the peat apart at planting (slices in sides and bottom) so could probably do that with TP rollers as well.

Yes, that is what I do, use a razor knife to make a couple of slits before transplanting

I fit 21 in nursery tray, they'll sit flat once the dirt is in them. Delayed starting the squash for a few days as snowstorm with day long power outage and it was cold. It should switch to a heat spell in a few days, so I'll be more comfortable taking the tomatoes, peppers and eggplants off the heat mats and moving them to just under lights. They can handle some colder temps after sprouting, but we're getting to high 20°s nights which is too cold.
