I have tried to do this to others but I must not be doing something right. How do you give someone a Thumbs-Up?

my computer is slow so it sometimes takes a second or two but you will see the box with thumb go grey and a number appear next to the box (1)

As gardengus said ... at the bottom right of each post you will see icons (star, acorn, and green thumb); click on the green thumb and it will turn gray/black showing that you've given a thumbs up.

Also, at the very bottom of each page there's an entire row of cute little icons to use in your posts. Included is a thumbs up

If you happen to be using Internet Explorer as your browser, you may have trouble with some of the features here. Firefox or Chrome will work much better on this site. (I only mention this just in case you still have trouble with getting the "thumbs up" to work.)

Does the thumbs up go to the person who posted, the last person who posted before you, or can you choose a person from somewhere in the thread?

It goes to the person on whose post you click. They also get a system message, like you will soon get.

Ah, I was looking at the icons which is with all the others, yellow smiley face with green thumb.

Those are for putting in your post. Usually in response to someone else's post.
