I have quite a few of these Pledtranthus in containers in the barnyard. I am wondering if I can cut them back and let them winter in the barn. Anyone have any ideas how I can keep them without putting them in the greenhouse? It is so tricky trying to keep things from freezing in containers. Maybe what I should do is remove them and just take cuttings for next year. Help me decide please.

Cuttings should strike as easily as Coleus, if you want to go that route. Is there room in other pots where you could stick pieces? What kind do you have? Are they making flowers? I keep seeing humming birds visiting 'Mona Lavender.' I got a couple others, but very recently so still really small, Cuban oregano, and a couple others. Would love to see some kind of flowers on those if they feel like making some. (Maybe you should send some to pieces to me, u know, as insurance!?)

Let me see if I can find a picture of one of the planters in the barnyard. i think I posted them in one of the container threads but I can not remember. I have no idea the name of the plant. Never thought of asking since I had no idea it would be so pretty. It is variegated as well as green/cream and cream colored. No flowers yet.



Before we had all the rain, it had yellow petunias and lantana in the containers...they were so pretty but the rains came and then the heat and all that is left are these babies. I would be happy to send you some cuttings if you send me your address privately. I ship my plants Mondays and Tuesdays of each week so I am sure I can manage to send you a few.
I thought maybe I would just take cuttings and start them in the greenhouse since these barnyard containers are so big. They look like coleus but much stronger looking plants. I have four boxes I want to use them in next year.

I vote cuttings,we take them every year.
The plectranthus veriegata is hard to find here.

OK....you gals want some? Let's make a list and I will get my old butt out there and cut some for all of us. I have plenty. How long a stem do you suggest is best for rooting?

Well how cool and generous is that, thank you! I was kind of being silly, but would be interested. And if one of us fails, the other could re-supply next spring. Five nodes is usually a good formula, 2 for roots, 3 with foliage above. What do you think?

Will send you a private note, hopefully we can find something of mine you'd like in return! No need to decimate your incredibly pretty pot so soon though, unless you'd prefer it for your own convenience. Waiting until you have dangers of frost would be fine if you'd prefer doing that.

Not sure exactly which that is either. Very similar to one I got recently, but much bigger leaves. Could just be because yours is older, more mature. There are actually two that look just alike that I got recently but one is much more fuzzy. Other than that, they seem identical. I chose ones that had a tiny bit of pink on the edge of some of the leaves although I think I've put them in more sun and am not seeing the pink at this time. Maybe while inside for winter.

So sorry the rain messed up the other plants. I've had some rain-related casualties this summer too, so different from the past 2 summers. Always some kind of challenge, huh?

Tiffany, I could send you the cutting earlier if you like, but you will have to wait until it gets colder for me to mess up the pots. LOL.. I could send you a whole stalk after that. Whatever you want...just kidding....I will be throwing them away anyhow when the frost gets them. I will try and pull yours before that happens. My SIL is great for throwing things away early....I may have to hurt him if he does that this year without me knowing. :rofl:

Both are lovely, thanks for sharing. I love the Blue yonder leaves. Mine has never bloomed so I have no idea if it is just leaves or will it bloom. How exciting....a surprise for sure if it does. I need to take more cuttings for next year, I just love it. It smells like tea when you cut it.

I had my first opportunity to see Plectranthus in bloom this summer, at a nursery. It was lovely.
I might even give it a try next year. Thank you for the photos tropicalover.
The bloom color is such a beautiful lavender/blue.

Sorry the pictures are so blurry, I have a very cheap camera and I really need to wear my glasses lol

I found that I have to use a tripod or something else to set the camera on. Otherwise I can't keep it still enough, then they come out blurry.
But you can see the lovely color of the blooms in your above photo.

Does anyone else ruffle the leaves to smell the scent of them? I'm not good at conjuring aroma words to go with a scent, how would you describe that scent? Musky? Piney? I think it's similar to Lantana, thoughts?
