I blame the horrible winter on all my garden phenomenon, especially plants that never came up.
Alas there are predictions of another one just like last year.

ZM, I think you're right that the Dome was originally just going to be a mini series... although I keep watching, at this point it's starting to remind me of "Lost," which lost me a little ways into the 2nd year Big Grin

Jo Ann -- I keep reading that this winter is supposed to be bad again too, but my husband said he saw in the Milwaukee Journal the other day that it's kind of a rumor that has taken off and not necessarily true. I guess it will be a pleasant surprise if it isn't as bad as we expect Smiling

I got my info from the National Weather long range forcast. It has to do with ElNino. I dont mind the snow but the longest period of bitter cold nearly did me in.

We have had below freezing temperatures the last few nights, so the garden is mostly toast. Freezing in mid-September? Too weird. And we haven't seen any hummers since our last cold snap, a few weeks ago. Our weather has been really strange this year!

This is getting harder to find different photos as the zinnias are the last things blooming

I'm just cutting seed heads now and waiting for the frost to take them. So over them.

Just love that Rose Queen!

Arlene. I love it too and will keep seeds or let it self sow. As the bloom matures it gets darker, so great a color.
I am over the yellow ones and will probably yank them but zinnia plans for 2015 are in the workd for more colors and a shorter variety.

Since I won't be doing market anymore I am going to do some shorter varieties for my garden as well. I will still do some of the tall ones and especially Rose Queen.

I still have zinnias, because I am growing some indoors as part of my zinnia breeding hobby. I call this one "Bed Head" because of the tousled look of its petals.

I love zinnias. Have a veggie garden and last row nearest the road is always a flower row. Mostly zinnias, some cosmos, bachelor buttons & tall celosia.

Started 96 zinnia seeds this year under grow lights. Germination is so much better than direct sow.

Hi Pandora, Welcome!
I am a zinnia hobbyist. Just out of curiosity, what kind(s) of zinnias did you start this year?
Pandora said:Germination is so much better than direct sow.

I do start zinnias indoors to get an early start, but I have found that direct sow can have results that are competitive with indoor germination. I do sow my zinnias in rows in a furrow covered about a half an inch deep, and kept continually moist until germination occurs. This an example of their germination, complete with lots of little weed seedlings as well.

A sharp hoe can remove the little weeds. Could you describe your direct sow technique?

I tip my hat to you.
