Calin,

I was in Romania in 1975 as part of a symphony tour. We spent almost a month and I thoroughly enjoyed myself. Really enjoyed the wonderful stuffed cabbage although I have yet to replicate it exactly here.

After one of our concerts we spent the night in a beautiful resort in the Transylvanian Alps. The gardener there was very clever and used semps to "write" the day in the flower bed. That is, he used hundreds of semps that were moved so that the date was written in semps. Very clever. Of course the "July" and "1975" didn't require anything to be moved daily, just the numbers of the day.

I did see some semps growing in the wild but they were well out of reach trying to get to them

Have you been able to collect any interesting semps from the wild?

Kevin

Wow. Coincidence.
I was born in 75. March.
Stuffed cabbage... well, when someone asks "what's a traditional Romanian dish" we all say stuffed cabbage. Though, I am not sure it's a Romanian invention :)
I'm not good yet with semps, but when I went hiking, I usually encountered the "plain green" ones so I let them be.
And yea, some are out of reach...

Calin, Depending on the season, those 'plain green' ones can be most colorful as the year rolls by. So don't discount what they can transition to:

I agree
Some give no indication of the vivid color to come at the right season.

Calin, actually I'm glad you leave them alone in the wild! (I know you said because you don't fancy them) but if everyone went out and picked the wild plants they'd very quickly be gone Thumbs down Just my 2 cents...I always get emotional when I hear people talk about picking/collecting plants from the wild Grumbling

But where would all of our hybrid semps be today if some had not been collected?
Same with sedum, and many other types of plants.

Lynn if a conservationist or biologist goes to collect plants they are probably doing so with utmost care, most of us layfolk won't take that type of care (or really know the best way to take plants from the wild) And the result for many plants is extinction. Buy plants from reputable nurseries
2 cents here! haha I'm free with my opinions! Welcome!
