Galore blooms look like they are flying off the obelisk

Anna, are you sure that's Galore? Victor has three images in our database that show it as deep purple, as registered "Small, deep purple flowers. Yellow anthers on whitish filaments." Clematis (Clematis viticella Galoreā„¢)
and COTW images match that too. http://www.clematis.hull.ac.uk...

I think the way the light is hitting them , makes it lighter. They have the same form, size and yellow anthers but I will double check in the morning.

Found a few more images online, most show deep purple but there are a few showing a bit lighter too. Could be soil, weather I guess.

These close ups look more like V V V. There is one growing near by. Maybe those naughty vines have played a trick on me. I will check later.

Yes, besides the lighter coloring, even the shape and size looks different. The petals seem longer, narrower. Maybe you do have a new cross! And a pretty one at that! Thumbs up

That would be very cool...hmm...what should I call it?
I did look it up here http://www.clematis.hull.ac.uk...
where the whitish coloring shows up. I am not sure about the petal shape.

Anna - Waiting to see how it blooms next spring may be the best path to identification. Colors can change in fall as evidenced by the attached photos of the exact same clematis 'Reiman'. It doesn't happen every year but it was lovely, looking so different, in 2011.

Thanks, Zuzu. I love the 11/29 color and only hope it does it again this year.

Arlene,

'Reiman' is just lovely! I wonder what causes such a color change. Both blooms are just gorgeous.

My only guess is that it was the weather. Maybe the cold weather we're enduring now will lead to more beautiful blooms in the next few weeks.

Two weeks ago I had to dig it up since we'll be getting new deer fencing installed around one garden, so we won't have anything to see this November. Since I haven't been in the garden since last week, due to the cold snap and the miserable wind, I had totally forgotten that I removed it to keep it safe from the tromping feet of the workers.

Would you believe it's on a plastic bag, covered with a mound of compost and in the shade?
