How lovely in Attracting Wild Geese to the Garden

When retirement time arrived, hubby and I decided we wanted to live out of town and be surrounded by nature. We moved to a small house on a big property that included a wooded valley, a wetland, and a large, stream-fed fish pond. My dear spouse insists on mowing large areas of grass, going right up to the pond’s edge in several places, and in doing so creates an ideal environment for Canada geese: short grass with lots of new growth, and excellent sight-lines for spotting predators a long way off.

Many folks have negative feelings towards these beautiful birds. I think much of the problem is in milder climates where the geese decide to quite migrating and become year-round residents. Not sure how or why that happens, and it can wreak havoc on fish ponds, particularly the expensive koi. Sounds like you have a well established transient community to enjoy. How nice, and I enjoyed your description of their annual visits. We get occasional visitors to our farm pond but so far they are just using it as a resting spot rather than a nesting site. Your wildlife refuge sounds wonderful.

I want to live in a world where the chicken can cross the road without its motives being questioned.
