Add Bulb Lilies to Your Daylily Garden and Add Height

By Newyorkrita
October 14, 2013

By planting Asiatic Lilies in your beds among your daylilies, you will add height and visual interest even before those daylilies bloom. Asiatics are early-blooming lilies, which bloom before most daylilies have started blooming for the season. It is easy to make room for the Asiatic Lilies because they are tall and skinny.

I like a lot of bloom so I am always looking for ways of adding more seasons of flowers to the same space.

Ah, I like that idea! And I have an asiatic lily in an unfortunate place. But I'm not sure when to move it. Anyone?

But it still has a big ol' green stalk! About 2-1/2 feet tall! Aren't you supposed to let the foliage die back?

You can wait until it dies back or you can move it green. I have moved plenty of lilies with the stalks still green. But if you are nervous about it, simply wait till it is turning brown. Just don't wait until you can't find the bulb.

I intend to add a lot more this fall. I bought 250 from Scheepers of their Pastel Asiatic Mix. Will be adding more to those daylily beds shown in the pictures here plus will be adding in between other daylilies in other gardens.

I am so glad you suggested this! I've only recently started growing daylilies and have been casting about for things to plant with them. Bulbs will be perfect! Thumbs up

Thumbs up Great idea Rita! The Asiatics have such vivid colors. I also like to plant the Orientals. The fragrance is amazing while live-heading in the evening.

For this Fall I had ordered 250 more new lilies. These are the Asiatic Pastel Mix from Scheepers bulbs. So I am adding even more lilies to my daylily beds this fall and it is gonna look extra nice next summer. So I really believe in the adding lilies among your daylilies.

I wanted to get something easy. As in a pretty mix that I could use in various daylily beds. I was in no mood to sort colors. And I have thought I should get that mix from Scheepers for the past two years and finally got around to doing so.

Usually I think of ordering lilies on the spring and of course with Scheepers, you have to get them for planting in the fall. Fortunately, lilies do well planted either spring or fall.
