Natalie, they are Bush Stone-curlews. The stone-curlews are large terrestrial waders. The group is cosmopolitan but occurs rarely in North America. Bush Stone-curlews are difficult to see on mainland Australia but, incongruously, are common and confiding on islands off shore. I feed the birds in the picture: they are, in order: parents - male female, behind them the babies - male and female. Every year these parents bring their hatchlings down for me to feed in September (they are precocious). Their calls are a series of spectacular screams. Good fun when you have people over for a first time visit: they nearly have a heart attack when the birds call from near their bedrooms. Here is another one asleep typically on its knees. Or was, until it half lifted an eyelid to monitor me.
