The Most Perfect Houseplant

By bennysplace
November 10, 2013

It may interest you to know that the literal definition of the word perfect is completion. So, when we say something is perfect, we deem it the most complete state of being that exists. This is how I feel about a certain houseplant.

Thank you for sharing your experience with this wonderful plant. I love it a lot and would love to have one, actually I would love a few. No such thing as too many blooming flowers! This plant reminds me of African Violets and my grandmother had dozens and dozens, they were in every window. Lovey dubby

Benny: What a great article; thank you so much for sharing your experience with this wonderful plant! Thumbs up I love the Cape Violet and have grown it off and on for @ eight years now. I've never been able to keep one of the regular large Streptocarpus alive for long but this one is a real trooper! Here's a link to the database for this great little plant which is also known by the names of Streptocarpella, False African Violet and Cape Primrose:

What an interesting article! Thankyou so much for a very informative read. I have been growing this lovely plant as an outdoor one in hanging baskets. I love the dainty flowers on the long fine stems. Here in Australia we call them Nodding Violets. I have to be careful not to let the sun reach them, so they hang under the verandah roof. They get a bit miserable in Winter, but they recover in Spring.
You have made me realise that I must tend to mine. They need repotting probably.
Thankyou again,
Val

Welcome Orchid40! Welcome! Glad to see you here.

I found these on a website I recently ordered from called, 'Accents for Home and Garden' it is a mail order division for 'Pepper's Greenhouses', I emailed them and they said they would have them in February, 2014. Besides them I could not find anyone who had this plant. I am happy with Pepper's and recently added them to my Recommendations.

Our Wal-Mart garden centers carried 10" baskets of the Streptocarpella this summer. I don't know anything about the company below but found them when googling and they carry dark blue, light blue, white and the one with the variegated foliage:

I tip my hat to you. It's really a great plant and as Benny shows in his wonderful article, an easy one to grow! I've heard some folks grow them as annuals and figured that's why Wal-Mart was selling them here. They would not survive winter in ground in this part of Florida.

Well hello everyone! First, I would like to offer my most sincere apologies for the belated response to all these wonderful notes. I did not realize that this article got published and now that it has I am so happy with all the kind and thoughtful replies. THANK YOU!

To virginiarose or to anyone else interested in getting this plant, I will VERY happily root some cuttings for you. I now have three large specimens of this beautiful plant and though I pruned not so long ago, I can see an opportunity for another trim. I will get a bunch of them started and those that want one, send me a note and I will work on getting you one. Bear in mind though that this may not be until spring as I would hate to have your plant die due to freezing. This will give each plant I start plenty of time to develop a healthy root system and then come spring, I will mail them out to all that want them. Smiling Here is to yet another reason to look forward to spring!

I was just downstairs opening all the blinds as part of my morning ritual and noticed the start I placed in the same pot containing a scented geranium has started to bloom. The friendly purple flowers were poking out and made me smile as you all make me smile. Your compliments and words mean so much to me and I love that so many not only read the article but also enjoyed it.

Thank you again and I wish you all the best of everything.

Blessings,
Benny

I would also love one Benny! Spring would work best for me as it's pretty cold already to ship anything here. I'm happy to pay for the start and postage. Thank you so much for the generous offer!

Hi there!

I have set a reminder on my calendar to get in touch with the both of you in April. I have started a couple each for you. :)

It is an absolutely a pleasure. I love sharing.

Wishing everyone the very best.

@Virginiarose, thank you kindly for the compliment on my photos. It is one thing that goes hand in hand with my gardening. I grow a lot of plants and flowers with the thought of taking their photo later. :)

Blessings,
Benny
