I think mine are all the same variety so I never thought to treat them different.
I wait for March ,them just cut leaf stems but not new growth.

Oh great! I have wanted hellebores for years and last spring I finally got some from a fellow gardener, but I didn't realize I had to cut them back. It's just my head is not holding onto much information anymore so I'm trying to limit the new things I have to learn! Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing And I have no idea what variety they are! Gonna mark this thread for sure so I can come back to it since I will never remember...

Arlene, I think you just cut off the dead part. That should be easy.....not the part facing-up. Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing

Good! I won't cut off new growth, but it's good to know I can cut off all the rest of the plant. One still has leaves but the others I cannot even find right now. But Bluestone has some new varieties I am really considering getting!

Mine are from Pine Knot and many of them live under giant hostas and a dwarf hydrangea. The old leaves are only visable in fall thru spring when hostas emerge and the hellebores have finished blooming.

Here in Kentucky, you just never know when the Hellebores will bloom- our winters can be like Georgia or like Michigan, it's a toss of the dice. Last year at this time I had lots of blooms, but we're having a long, cold winter this year, so I'm not seeing any new growth yet. I let the old leaves hang on till they start looking shabby and new growth starts- I've wondered if the old leaves help protect the new growth? Some years we get super gold weather after new growth and blooms are on, and I see damage, although they typically produce more growth and blooms afterwords too.

Last year I started seeing some pretty Hellebores at box stores, Lowes and Home Depot. I love them with spring bulbs.

@gemini_sage
Neal, that is interesting point about the old leaves adding protection. I bought a few the year before and last year too, but none have bloomed. I just found out a local nursery is getting in one gallon pots this week. I want to buy something blooming so I will have at least one flower. *Blush*

Mercy Rack! I love it! This reminds me that I haven't visited Lowe this season and that big white Clemitis I bought off the rack out there. Only the real gardeners hang out back there. At the check out, when they are staring at your beat up plants, and they are standing there with a tree full of blossoms, I love to tell them when they get home, the blooms start falling off and may not return for two or three years! Hilarious! (the devil made me do it)

I would love a few nice upward facing hellebores, I need to go back through the threads and see what I want to order. Have you posted all yours? (except new ones)

I have a Pink Frost, and the leaves look so shabby, like they are freezer burned around the edges. Turning brown around the edges and look awful. Can I trim those off? All at once? It is starting to grow some new stuff and is blooming now.
