What is it growing on? I've been trying to figure out how to get a shape like that for a rose to grow up.

I have never seen one grow that way. I have tried and tried to grow clematis. Finally got one that is not so spectacular but it does survive here. But after two summers only one flower.
From -60 Alaska to +100 Virginia. Wahoo

I'm sorry - I just now noticed that there were questions about the clematis!
It is growing over a cheap wrought iron arch. It's got a huge "trunk". Not sure if that is the correct term!
