Once again a very entertaining program. Hearing the voices to go with the personalities was great. I did miss the normal farm update, but I picked up a lot of good info. Overhead watering for Roses was a huge shock for me, I did that till everyone told me not to. I thought cleaning off the foliage was good, now I have confirmation. I just need to be careful when I do it. I recommend the pod cast every chance I get.
I want to say I think you deserve acorns, but I am currently out, Zuzu seems to think she has enough anyhow, do you have a credit dept?

I was certainly delighted that they both agreed to be interviewed for the podcast. It was great and they did perfectly.

Trish and I decided to forego the usual farm updates so we could save as much time as possible for Sue and Zuzu. Plus, well, there wasn't a whole lot going on this past week except us freezing and staying huddled indoors!

It was really great to finally get to hear CalifSue. She sounds just as I picture her to sound. (OK, that was poor wording but I don't know else to say it LOL !)
Zuzu sounds exactly as she does in person...I had the good fortune to actually meet her years ago (Dave, too !) at the gathering in Temecula they referred to in the podcast.
These two ladies contribute a wealth of information and whenever I want to research a rose I go immediately to the ATP Rose database. There's really no need to go elsewhere because it grows better and better every day.

I'm glad Zuzu emphasized contributing to the database and encouraging more people to do so. The more input we get from across the country on a given rose is very helpful for all of us. Regardless of how insignificant you feel your input may be, go ahead and contribute anyway. Someone will benefit from it, so don't be shy.

Sue and Zuzu - I can't tell you how much I enjoyed hearing your voices. I have talked to you via tree-mail so many times and to hear your voices was the icing on the cake. You are both SO knowledgeable and so patient with problem children like me and so helpful. It's such an honor to know you both.

My dad grew beautiful roses and Mr. Lincoln was his favorite. I grew up in zone 5 but every fall, he would put rose cones over his roses and cover them with burlap type blankets and then rope around that. It looked so ugly but in summer time, his roses were just beautiful. He would root many roses just by cutting, sticking them in the ground and putting a glass over it.

Just finished listening to the Podcast…And I loved it! I've learned so much, and I'm feeling very inspired! I'd always thought that roses were picky, disease prone, and just plain old difficult to grow. My 'fears' of growing roses have been diminished after listening and learning from these two wonderful women! And this full week of articles from ALL the wonderful people here, have really inspired me to "break ground" for some beautiful blooms. Can't thank you enough!!!!

I certainly was flattered (although flustered as well ) when Dave asked us to do this but it was fun, Dave is so easy to chat with, we could have easily made this much longer than it already was.
I'm glad to hear this rose week has been an inspiration for many and that you enjoyed podcast.

ATP is such a wonderful forward moving garden site. It's success is based not only on the creative minds and talent of Dave and Trish but also the wonderful ideas and inputs from it's growing members like all of you! So please, set yourself a little goal to perhaps add a little something to the database each time you visit, maybe something like 5 items each time. A photo, a comment on how it grows for you, maybe flesh out a little of the details, every little bit helps!

Now ya all come on out to Californay and visit us! Bring an extra suitcase, we are surrounded by nurseries here!

It was wonderful to hear what Zuzu and Sue sound like! I really enjoyed the podcast and thank Dave and Trish for interviewing two of my favorite gardening people.

In the past, when I'd hear my local gardeners talk of the evils of overhead watering for roses, I had to wonder if they stood outside with umbrellas to protect their roses. Then I got to see rose bushes at one of their properties and the roses were planted in full shade; so much for their knowledge. It's enough to keep the house free of dust, I can't dust my plants as well!

Inspired. Listening so far to the Calif-Sue portion of podcast. I am inspired to replace some 80 David Austins that were destroyed when I lost the water line to that section of the rose garden. I am inspired after some years, to replant the David Austins and some new one's besides that Sue has mentioned. You couldn't have chosen better experts, Dave. I have been following Zuzu and Calif Sue for some years. I remember many years ago an article about orange roses that was the inspiration for my David Austin rose garden. A favorite scene was Pat Austin with a background of black hollyhocks. Maybe 2014 will be the year to get back into roses, my first love among plants.

That was a very interesting podcast! I enjoyed it and now have soil envy of both of them. I have sand here and roses don't much seem to like it. All but one of my roses is grown in pots. (Like I have a lot of roses to begin with ... not.) I need to mosey on over to the rose forum because I have a lot of questions now since listening to these guest speakers.....

Shoe (more'n likely now keeping his eyes out for new roses to grow)

It was a real pleasure to listen to the rose pod cast and enjoy all other aspects of rose week. I plan on listening several more times. It made those two rose loving ladies seem more personal. Lots and lots of great information although every suggestion does not work out the same in different gardens in different areas of the country. One comment.....I often hear that HTs are only hardy to Zone 7. I grow mine successfully here in Zone 5b as do many friends and rose lovers in this area. A vast majority winter well all though some seem more prone to winter kill. I do not mound them or give them any special protection. Two things I do toward fall is not fertilize after the end of July and slowly cut down on the frequency of watering to encourage dormancy. Some years if we have a sudden cold snap before they achieve dormancy I do have more winter kill. This is one of those years. They look black and I will be interested to see how low I will need to go with my pruning.

Deer take care of all pruning on new growth here. I need a sign that says: BUCKS STOP HERE!
