I recently purchased a home in Liberty county Texas. These mounds started appearing in my yard late last summer. Can someone tell me what they are? There is no insect or any living thing evident around them or after knocking over.

Yep! Crawfish hole. When they dig their holes, they bring the mud up and build those little chimneys.

Thank you very much. I would never have guessed crawfish. My yard in Michigan has 4 feet of snow. Can't wait to move!

We have these all over our bottomland. I wish I knew a way to catch all the crawdads. We could have dinner!

I'm just relieved they aren't termites. When I googled dirt mounds - that is what comes up. I doubt a crawdad is going to eat my new house. I love this site. Thank you for your vision and drive to make it all happen.

Not to worry on this front: termites don't like the light of day.

You will only see the "evidence", wood full of pinholes.
At our ranchiito we do NOT keep bees.
They and other critters grace us with their presence, and we provide for their need to the best of our abilities.

I did not see a crawfish or crawdad in this type of hole. What I saw was what looked like a shrimp with thirty to forty legs! I was always told it was a crawfish hole. Since I have various snakes in my yard, I also think that some of these mud homes could be from a snake - but never seen a snake coming out or going into the hole! I wish someone would somehow put a camera of some sort close to these mud homes so we could see exactly what is living there!
