The Native Plant Finder link Muddy posted above is new this year and is a work in progress, so it should only become better as time passes. It is being developed under the guidance of Doug Tallamy, the author of Bringing Nature Home, and an excellent follow-up book with Rick Darke, The Living Landscape. A recent book on designing sustainable landscapes with predominantly native plants is Planting In A Post-Wild World by Claudia West and Thomas Rainer.

Thank you Susan, I didn't know about that site and it looks like it is going to be very good, it already has a lot of information.
As David said, the author is a wonderful writer so only good things can be expected from that site. We all have so much to learn.

Just started reading and love how they tell where the flowers were found. she painted from the real plants.and I have learned about a couple parks I did not know we had here in Indiana.

I found this awesome wildflower database. It isn't a stagnant database.

There is a google map. You find where ever you want to know what wildflowers are blooming at the time you are accessing the site. It lists the flowers and the probability the flower will be in bloom. You can click on the flower and find more information but not planting info. You have to see it to know what I am trying to say.

Unfortunately you can't save anything even if you make an account but like I said the site isn't stagnant.

It is a feast for the eyes. If you get a chance to walk about your area, like I do, I get obsessed looking for these flowers. If you want to visit somewhere, you may want to know what wildflowers are in bloom.

Site looks very nice and useful but within seconds I observed that a photo of Lamium amplexicaule (Henbit) was labeled Glechoma hederacea (Ground Ivy). Don't know which plant the data actually goes with, and thus how to get the file corrected. I sent an email to the photo author. Not a good start.

Good catch greenthumb. I just looked at the site and henbit picture looked like henbit so they must have gotten your message. I didn't happen to see ground ivy picture...

Just went back and checked - both Henbit and Ground Ivy are [different] photos of the same plant.

Frostweed - I took a 6 month weeds ID course with my landscape business partner to settle the same issue between us. Both the photos you linked to are the same plant - pink flowers with spots, clasping upper leaves. Ground Ivy has flowers of similar morphology, but they are unambiguously blue, and the leaves are on fairly lengthy petioles. Also, Ground Ivy produces long, very thin runners while Henbit is basically erect.

I have to agree with Frostweed. If you look in our database, you can see comparable pictures as those shown on the wildflower search website. It's true they are similar but there are definite differences too. Color can be a little deceiving in pictures.
