I have heard a lot of folks say that they cannot get their Amaryllis/Hippeastrum to bloom the second or third year, and I was very surprised to be told by a saleslady at a garden center that she was unsuccessful.

I have about 10 of them including Hippeastrum papilio. How much miracle grow do you give the Amaryllis? Please tell me more about the fertilizer. Thanks.

Judy, I use Miracle-gro all purpose liquid houseplant food 8-7-6 with 0.10% chelated iron, follow the instructions for feeding on the label, do not over feed. I buy it at WalMart, it's inexpensive and lasts a long time.

I put 2 Jobe's plant food spikes into each pot as soon as it is finished blooming. Then I transplant each bulb outdoors in the spring and fertilize twice over the summer. I bring them inside in October and let them go dormant for 10-12 weeks. Then they are ready to bloom again.
