My haworthia is growing straight up. I would like to cut it in two and let the top part callous over and then pot it up. Is this the correct way to handle this? Is this the right time of year, or should I wait for Spring?


Any advice would be appreciated?

I've never cut a haworthia in half (top and bottom halves). I usually wait for a pup to appear and remove that to propagate. Sorry can't help.

doesn't it look like it is getting rather tall? I have no pups and have had this plant for quite several years. I was reading where you can start these little gems by leaf cuttings.

It doesn't look tall in an overgrown or unhealthy way like it was etiolating...I see only one side of it but is there a branching that has happened within this one plant? If there is that might be a spot where you can clip it where the branch starts and try to callus that section for rooting. I ask only because the bottom looks less textured than the top like it was two different sections. Also pups can be hidden at very base of the plant or inside amongst branches. Take a closer look if there might be one...they can be quite small.
I have never tried leaf cuttings nor seen any leaf root. I've seen leaves separated from the stem and the leaf where it was attached to the stem is pretty flat and dry...

Perhaps it is me then because I have never grown this before. If it does not look unusually tall to you, then I am probably fine.

The plant is symmetrical and looks quite healthy to me. Maybe I will wait. I am assuming this little guy would like it outside like the others? I may put him out on the porch this summer.

I have a similar Haworthia (fasciata) and it grew tall. After the plant became root bound, it started pupping and filling in.

This past spring, it pushed itself up and out of its' pot so I divided and repotted. Not sure if I can find an old photo but I wouldn't be too worried about yours.

When one of these becomes etiolated, The leaf structure will become skinnier and more misshapen. Yours looks healthy and fine.

It will like the outdoors but not direct sunshine as that can cause sunburn.

I do not cut my haworthia's either. Your plants looks happy to me It makes pups and also long runners if in a big container, so it can easily multiply. If it were mine, I will just add some more cactus soil with pumice and just let it be. It will be growing more actively when temps go warmer.

do you think I need to repot? I hadn't really thought about that yet. I don't think there are any roots coming out the bottom.

I can add more cactus soil.

@Carolyn22 just seeing this thread, I cut 2 of my Haworthias thinking it would get them to "pup" and it just made a new crown, but I planted the top part which rooted and is shorter than it had been - so it did give me 2 plants!
I'd say go for it if you feel that one is too tall...they root super easy

You can repot if you want, maybe next size up, or just add some soil at the base. My haworthia prefers to be tightly packed, somehow makes more pups that way if it feels tight.

Good to know Tarev, because I have mine mixed in a large pot, and the soil is totally loose! Maybe I'll pat it down more and see if that works to help them "pup up"

Tarev - Perhaps I will add some soil to the top. I would like this little guy to pup.

Greg - good to know they root easily. I am glad to know my 'instincts' were correct. I do think I am going to wait to see if I can get this guy to pup.

I do think he looks healthy, so perhaps this summer he will pup for me.

I would think it would mean the end of it... wow!

Nope you get 2 (if they both live - they need some loving "neglect" for a little while during the time they root!) but the one who had its head chopped off no longer has a "roseatte" so it sortof looks odd, but it most likely will grow a new one!
