I love water chestnuts! in Water Chestnuts

Next time you make a salad or stir fry, imagine crunching on a sweet water chestnut harvested fresh from your garden. I decided to try to grow water chestnuts in my home garden in Central Florida using fresh lake water in a half whiskey barrel.

But how do you harvest them? Do you lose the plant when you harvest the chestnuts? I know nothing about growing them, all the ones I've eaten came out of cans.

Where did you get the initial corms? What is the length of growing season? How hardy (or not) are they? I'd love to give them a try if I could find the corms. Might have to bring them indoors when it gets cold. I remember back in the day when we used canned bean sprouts, can't even imagine that any more. I've heard the difference between canned and fresh water chestnuts is night/day, and would love to give this a try.

I want to live in a world where the chicken can cross the road without its motives being questioned.

What a fun idea! I could see dropping a pot of water chestnuts into any of my "mixed" water garden pots... not in with the lotus, though, as I don't think anything can compete with lotus roots!

You might be able to find the fresh corms at an Asian market. I remember seeing them in Vancouver which has a fabulous Chinatown where we used to go to buy fresh lychee. Always thought it would be too much trouble to have to peel the water chestnuts, but my view has changed a lot since then . . if we knew then what we know now, huh??

Btw, Jill lotus roots are edible, too. You've heard the term "Lotus Eaters" ? I've never tried one, though.

LOL, I think the lotuses the "Lotus eaters" ate put them into a dreamy drugged stupor... pretty sure mine aren't that kind of lotus?

Yeah, I figure if it's worth the trouble of peeling fresh lychee, ditto for fresh water chestnuts. We do have a new asian grocery here... Maybe I can luck into a sprouted one in the bin...

Hey Trux4 - this is a fantastically creative idea - water chestnuts are delicious and nutritious...I agree with PacificNW about how you might be starting the change we have experienced in how to get bean sprouts!!! Good for you!! keep us posted on your learning lessons!
