Jan you might see BK come back. I divided mine in the fall and when everything finally melted here it looked like it was a goner but it eventually came around and is growing fine.

Drove by a yard yesterday, and saw Double Knock outs blooming like crazy with a bed of the old yellow daylilies also in full bloom, first ones I have seen here so far this year.

The unprotected daylilies appear to be okay, at least alive. The foliage may be
more damaged than I can see at this time after they have sun for
a day or so.

This is how the foliage looked the next morning after the freeze.
When I felt the leaves, they were frozen solid.
Thumb of 2014-04-17/mistyfog/8fd3d6

We covered the newest daylily plants with buckets, blankets, and then plastic.
Also covered some blueberries planted last year with our 6 foot homemade tomato
cages, then blankets, then plastic, and covered one clematis the same way,
as well as a favorite hosta. All these plants were evidently snug as a bug,
and are fine. Of course, it is going to take me a week to launder all the
blankets, bedspreads, and insulated draperies. Just kidding. Well, maybe not.

Puddles of rain on the plastic created chunks of ice as shown below:

I have waited a few years to see a pink wisteria bloom. It is the size of a small
tree and was covered with bloom buds. They are now toast. I think it is time to
give up on Chinese Wisteria.

Sorry to hear that temps down in Florida have been so cool. My gut feeling Michelle and Fred is that all that rain will give you some beautiful blooms albeit much later than normal. This has been an extraordinary Winter what with the Polar Vortex and arctic temps. So patience is a virtue this year. I have lost only 1 plant, and that plant was looking sad last year. I did not trim my plants last Fall…leaving all the leaves on them. I covered them heavily with leaf mulch and topped that with pine bark mulch. And I was careful not to plant any new plants beyond the middle of August. It's just too risky, and begs for trouble. I am now 2/3 into cleaning up 250 plants in the garden. I have not lost any fans. On the contrary, after lifting up all that mulch, I have found tons of new fans, and very healthy old fans. There is no question that all the snow we had in February and early March insulated the plants, providing another layer of warmth beyond the mulch. Leaving the leaves on last Fall, makes for a bigger cleanup for me in the Spring, but I swear it works better for the plants up here in New England than cutting them back. I have to say, I am extremely pleased with what I am seeing. No loss and increase in fans. Now, with both rain and 3" of new snow this week which has already melted, I am going to wait until I see a break in these cold temps. Our 'mud season' is always a crap shoot. We have had 74 degree days this week, and last night 19 degrees. The mountain is still open, and Spring skiing is great this year. Melting mountain snows have all our rivers, streams, and lakes swollen to the max. How all this plays out depends on warmer temps, and rainfall. Remembering last year, we had almost 2 months of rain in May and June. But my garden was the best its ever been. It's just Spring. I will take it one day and a time. I did move my new plant shipping back 2 weeks this year into the 2nd week in May because of all the snow melt this year. I feel that was a excellent decision. Big Grin Big Grin

Cutting back can be good or bad around here. On some of the plants I had problems with, I think the fans started to rot because we had some very cold nights with no snow - that dead foliage just trapped the rotting insides.

Alex, good to hear your plants are doing so well after the horrid winter you had. I do not trim my leaves back in the fall either, I leave everything for spring, most of my daylilies are looking good, still waiting for a few to show.

Alex, it is better to leave the old foliage on the daylilies here as well.
But, it's a pain in the spring to catch just the right time to take it off
with the weird weather of alternating hot and cold. When hot, the plants want
to grow, then it turns cold, and they can't unfurl properly. They are
little tight masses at the top, so we unfurl them by hand. Crazy things we
gardeners do for plants. *Blush*

Have/had a medium-sized clump of Deep in My Heart, an introduction/bonus
from Maryott that didn't like the winter cold, so it is now only 3 to 4
pitiful looking fans. Bold color too. I liked it, but may lose that one.

Margaret..Good to hear all your plants are doing well. Some plants are just slow to show themselves…new growth. Don't panic. Usually they just take a few weeks and in some cases a month to show themselves esp. if they are hard dormants. I was more worried about my 'Dragonfly Dawn" an evergreen. I waited a few days went back and checked it again, and saw little green leaves pushing up through the soil. Phew! I didn't want to lose that one.

Shirlee…Yep, the clean up in the Spring is messy. I carry a big white garbage bag with me and fill it full of old leaves. When it's full, I dump the bag in the forest on my property. Who knows, maybe 'Deep In My Heart' may surprise you. Shower it with good thoughts. Whistling

Spring is very hard on all the plants with the constantly changing weather, today is it lightly snowing! Blinking Thumbs down

I lost almost all of my daylilies. The winter in Ohio kicked my garden's butt! Of the twelve different daylilies I was growing only three survived. The only survivor I can identify are my Flore Plenos. Not sure which my other two survivors are, but I look forward to finding out. Here's my list of casualties:

Spiritual Corridor
Wisest of Wizards
Midnight Magic
Starstruck
Kwanso
Stella d' Oro
Autumn Red
Unidentified pink daylilies
Unidentified red daylilies
Unidentified double red daylilies
Common roadside daylilies

The unidentified ones were gifts from from old neighbors, which makes me especially sad to lose them. I've ordered some new varieties to try, and in the meantime I look forward to seeing which two on the list survived the winter apocalypse.

Anna, that is odd. I am here in Ohio too. I grow all of my daylilies in the ground, none in pots. I have very little mulch left, as it has been at least 5 years since I put any down. We had close to -30 this past winter. I did leave the old foliage on over winter, since I have little mulch. Maybe that helped some.

I did not loose any daylilies. May have lost a few fans, can't say, as I no longer do "fan counts" but everything looks about right to me.

In fact, I don't think I lost any perennials of any kind. With the winter we had, I am surprised!

I don't have that many daylilies left these days...
About 25 selected seedlings of mine
Around 50-75 named cultivars
A small crowded patch of small seedlings that have not bloomed yet.

Some of mine are out in the main flower bed, and it has poor drainage.

Several were new to me last year, or divided down from clumps to one or two fans in late summer... So not like they were all established clumps.

I do grow a few evergreens, most are listed as semi evergreen, with a few dormants. I have not paid that much attention to what my seedlings are yet.

I wonder why Anna lost so many, yet I didn't? I am 150 miles north of her? You would think that would be worse? And, with many of mine in bad drainage.... Shrug!

Strange... Shrug!

With all the talk of losses I was afraid to go out and really take a good look around. I am glad everything made it through!
