I actually managed to get some of the Platycodon to germinate. Just a few of each white, blue and pink. And a few of the Astra Blues. I am treating them like gold. Hoping to get them to maturity and blooms for the seeds. I wonder if they would do better winter sown or simply scattered in the garden. Any idea??

Dont you just love that Astra Blue? I bought plants from a nursery at least 4 years ago. I am not sure if I ever let them go to seed and self sow.
Maybe other winter sowers will chime in with their experiences.
I think my plants just enlarge naturally.

I am hoping they will 'take' to our weather. I love Bellflowers of all sorts. I have tried Blue waterfall year after year but it never seems to return. Tried different spots in the garden even. I get the impression they like it dry.

That may well be Mary and I am thinking its too cold up where you are. I had a nice plug going in a tall container for 2 years.Last winter was the coldest on record especially March. The Blue Waterfalls is dead.
The parent I took it from is alive and well in a amended clay part shade garden.
I loved the way BWF spread in the pot and reached out.
I plan to put a FanFlower in the pot for the same effect but wont worry about not seeing it next year.

I really love that. Do you think it would survive if I put it in a pot like yours, and took it inside and kept in the crawl space where it is cool and dark. I water lightly my geraniums, begonia tubers over the winter maybe once a month down there.

I see no harm in trying that. The diameter of that pot is 16 inches.We had subzeros all winter and March never went above 20 for ages. I think in the ground had a warmer temp, plus its an 4 year old plant.

Subzero meaning below freezing, not below 0, as in -20F??

I lost several campanulas. White clips was in a large planter 20 inch diameter. It hasnt showed up.

Now those are almost invasive here, the white and blue clips. But easily controlled. If you want clumps, I could send some. Thanks for the url. I will read up on them.

Not necessary to send any. I have decided to limit perennials in containers.

Wen have BES They are the invasive kind everyone on the tract has some and few are gardeners. I think the developer planted them with the landscaping..

Well that would seem to indicate perennial, at least there. I will keep an eye on them and dig up promptly if they appear invasive. Feverfew, which I really like, pops up all over the garden as does the blue and white clips. They surely send seeds as do the wild geraniums. More than I like and harder to dig up even small.
