A guy I used to work with in SoCal said the ideal situation is to move to Washington, but just over the OR/WA border, so you can live in WA where there's no income tax and shop in OR, where there's no sales tax. Big Grin

And live on the coast, bit a tiny ways inland, so it's not quite so foggy, but not farther inland where the summers are hotter and the winters are colder

Yes, I am looking for that "sweet spot".

i very much consider myself living in the PNW amongst the Coastal Redwoods
and 5 miles in any direction will be a different micro climate
from banana belt to cold or hot extremes
17 miles away i have seen the Chetco effect ( similar to the Santa Ana winds) at 105° and 73° here at home

Dick, you are so lucky, living among the Redwoods! I lived in Fortuna at one time. Was one the prettiest areas on earth to me.

If you re-settle near sea level, I bet the change in elevation affects your climate more than the change in latitude.

We traveled from Brookings. OR to Astoria, OR, and then back again...looking at so many different places. We have not yet settled on one house, since we have not yet sold ours, which would be the first thing to do. This was more of a motivational trip more than anything, for us to get our house ready to sell. We liked the Alsea Bay, and several small coastal communities. I never thought of living so close to the sea, but it certainly is a viable option from hot summers.

Evelyn, you are smart, selling your house first! We came up here to Idaho on vacation, just to see what this area was like, and bought a house! Didn't even have ours on the market yet. Hilarious! Oh well, we're happy, and that counts!

the Washington and Oregon Tax Nazi's have long ago gotten smart about the 'living on the border ' truck. They actually have the equivalent of 'border' guards to catch stuff like that. Like cars purch in one state but living in another etc. It could be an urban myth but knowing how the tax collectors don't want to miss a trick it makes sense.

We used to go south to shop and avoided taxes by showing our driver's license. They wouldn't tax us as we lived in Alaska. They do now. Which is correct anyway. It is where the transaction takes place, not where you live.

Coastal Redwoods sound like the "PNW-est" of PNW areas.

Neat!

Evelyn, Becky always gets the "feel" of an area and a neighborhood as part of the real estate process. She drives around an area and soaks it up, then uses the Internet to find houses in particular neighborhoods.

Hot summers may be part of your past, just as I found after moving from the CT/NJ/NY area to the Paradisaical North West (coastal) region.
