For those of you who have never had paniculata hydrangea (i have limelight) they so outperform the big leaf varieties you will wonder why you never grew them.
For one, they bloom on new growth so you can prune in fall or even late winter and still get a bush civered in blooms.
Second, they grow in a graceful shrub shape so don't need to be shaped.
Third, the color is exciting as it changes day by day as blooms mature. Limelight, for instance, starts out greenish, then a lush creamy white then a pink with copper highlights.
Fourth, it is tough! Mistreated mine when I moved it in February, clipped down to 20", dug out and moved into different part of yard. This summer it shot up and is covered with blooms.
I really love this plant.

that is really pretty, I will have to keep my eyes out for it. I guess I didn't realize there were so many different ones.
Mine are looking better but there were no blooms this year of course. maybe next year. I hope it dies then I can throw it out LOL

My Blushing Bride has one...just one single big flower head. Hilarious!

Twist-n-Shout looks good, but there hasn't been a single bloom on it all year. Rolling my eyes. Maybe next year will be better.

so will these kind take full shade? I need something for shade on the North side of my house and there are trees there too, so hardly no sun. But the spot is pretty good sized. About 20 ft long and 5-6 feet wide.
The strawberry color is pretty. So is the purple one. Shoot, I need one of all of them LOL

The Strawberry one is paniculata and needs more sun. The purple one 'Together' can tolerate a lot of shade and morning sun only.

Wow! Together is going to be added to my collection as soon as I find one! I have Pistachio, and it also has some pretty blooms. How do you know if they can take more shade and still bloom?

A lot would depend on how deep the shade is and the time of day it's in that shade compared to the amount of hours it's in sun.

I was just looking at Together the other day, thanks for the conformation that it is a good one. Does anyone have Forever and Ever Red or a suggestion for a good red one?

Pinky Winky has been a very good performing paniculata that is also very fragrant.

Same here and the colors don't turn ugly.
