Herbie ~ that is cute! I've seen that done here with large round bales of hay, usually at a vegie stand where they are selling watermelons. Always makes my mouth water...

Yes, really just big turnips. They like cold weather, making them a much more reliable crop here than watermelons (unfortunately); we had 52 degrees F this morning, with a high of only 64 today, not sure if summer is EVER going to show up this year. At least the sun is shining, but I should NOT need a sweatshirt on the 4th of July Thumbs down

I remember a July 4th picnic I had a quite a few years back, maybe 15 years or more ago when we had to move things into the garage and start a fire it was so cold out. I had a friend visiting from Oklahoma that year, and I though she would never get warm. LOL.

Got my first blacktail mountain watermelon. It was delicious! I took a picture before I ate it. You have to use your imagination to see it. Rolling on the floor laughing

Hey, Ya'll!

Do any of you prune your watermelon vines beyond where the first watermelon starts? Confused

I watched a video of a guy (ldsprepper on YouTube) who snipped the vines off past each 1st melon. His melon patch now looks like tennis balls on tethers. His rationale is that the nutrients will hit that 1st melon, and any melons beyond that one on the same vine will be seriously deprived of nutrients, since the first melon will suck them all up...

He has 25 melons growing in a raised bed 18" x 12'. Very neat and tidy.

Comments? I tip my hat to you.

I ususally do that toward the end of the season to stop new ones from developing that I know won't make it to ripen before the frost. But I ususally get two or more per vine. You'd surely get less melons, but maybe bigger ones. Might be worth a try.

They sure are, but they're not all big. It's very strange, the variety of sizes they are
