I don't think that's what Bill is looking for but I just might.

When they are ripe, the berries fall off the pod. If you have them bagged, all the berries will be in a pile at the part of the bag facing down. Their color does not change. Then you have to squeeze the berries to push the tiny seeds out. It is painstaking but worth it - have a tray with fine moistened seedling mix waiting when you get the seeds out, or put the seeds into a little container with distilled or rain water overnight before planting. Tweezers and a very fine stainless steel strainer are good for this work. I also use the blue paper shop towels when squeezing seeds out because you can see the seeds easier on them than on white paper towels. The containers I use are the little plastic ones that have sauces in them and that come with take-out Chinese food or other take-out. They are perfect for soaking seeds and for collecting pollen for storage in the fridge. Make sure you use the little lid that goes with them.

Thanks! I'm keeping an eagle eye on the berries ... can't wait for them to ripen so I can plant the seeds!

Lol ... I really don't know .. when I saw I had a receptive flower I was scouring all the Caladiums I could find for pollen.

That would be awesome! Do seedlings show their true patterning in the first year? How long does it take for them to form a bulb?

If you can keep them growing for a whole year after germination, you may start seeing some colors at the conclusion of that year. When you really start to see what you've got is when they come up after their first dormancy. Because of this, labeling your cross and seed trays is extremely important if you want to know later what the parents were. Otherwise, if you wish to duplicate that cross and you don't know the parents you used, you're going to have fun trying to find out which plants you used.

Well that sounds ominous "if you can keep them growing for a whole year". Does this mean there will be a lot of die off?

No, it just means they may decide to go dormant before a whole year is up. The longer they keep growing, the larger the little tubers will grow. The larger the tubers grow, the better colors you'll see next season. Unless you are not watchful of your seedlings (and you should be, no matter what seedlings you are growing), you don't have much to worry about.

Is it known what triggers dormancy in Caladiums?
