You're right Lynn, the variation in your pic is probably due to age. Of course, crittergarden's bulbs are not tulips or daffodils, but Hyacinthoides is a good guess. Certainly one of the "minor" bulbs.
Thought you all might find this interesting, too - a Hyacinthoides sp. bulb I bisected. It may look a little different than the ones above, but certainly within the variability of Hyacinthoides.
If you look close, you can see that the roots originate at the base of the center stem.
Roots are annual on many types of bulbs, including Hyacinthoides.
