When I started my gardens years ago, I wanted all Daylilies but I soon tired of that when all the color was gone early in the season. I have done a lot of experimenting and tossing out, but I think I am pretty happy with things now. I grow tall asiatic lilies in the center portion of the beds so the stems will be hidden as they fade. I absolutely love the Tiny series of these and spot them all over near the front edges of the gardens. They clump up so fast and last so long. I have close to 30 different varieties of those. I spot those gorgeous coneflowers in many spots depending on height. My new favorite filler flower is helenium which is a hardy perennial that is available is different heights and colors and blooms from late summer until frost. It has a daisy like flower that comes in reds and shades of oranges and rust. For fall color, I just love the blackberry lily which is so interesting. It is tall, so I put seeds in empty spots around the garden but more towards the center. It looks wonderful and it's seed heads add so much to the fall landscape. I also put clusters of zinnias around the outside edges of the gardens wherever there is a bare spot. I started out with a few sedum plants mixed in, but got so interested that I have a seperate sedum garden now and collect all the different types I can find that will grow here in MN.
Happiness is doing for those who cannot do for themselves.

Helenium sound nice! I'll have to check that out to see it it will grow here. I have three of the asiatic lilies in the Tiny series, but did not know that there were that many more! I'm going to have to do some checking on those too. They do clump up fast!

I plant most everything with daylilies. Sedums, dwarf iris and mums along the edges as well as annuals. Lots of lilies, some tall bearded iris, helenium, goldenrod, butterfly bushes ect.

Here's one of the helenium that is just starting to open as the daylilies are coming to an end.

The Buzz series of butterfly bushes are short and make a nice edging in front of taller daylilies.

Oh that is a pretty helenium! And I think my mom has a butterfly bush that is in the Buzz series. I just saw it last night and was surprised at how short it was. Very nice!!

Daylilies
Nothing really. Just weeds Smiling Well I don't plant them. I put some portulaca here and there. I tried lilies (orientals) and they are not doing good here, bloom with daylilies and only for 2-3 days. Tried cosmos - it grew sooo huge, tall and wide and all over nearby daylilies Smiling This year tried some zinnias - they are also tall. Anyway I really have no room for anything. I have one blackberry lily, it's ok. It's a yellow one, not orange. Orange ones grow quite tall and are very aggressive here.

You can get both cosmos and zinnias that are short. I like the Dreamland series of cosmos.

The Buzz Buddleia are suppose to get 3-5 ft tall, but none of mine are more than 2' tall. It may be because in this zone they die back to the ground in the winter. They do need some deadheading to look good.

I haven't seen any Buzz series around here either Angry One year I planted white marigolds. I loved them but they got to large.

Oh I remember the white marigolds were popular here about 5 years ago. I did plant some also but I have not seen them for several years. I plant heuchera in amongst the daylilies and daiseys.

I have all my heucheras planted in the shade with the hostas, do they tolerate the sun with daylilies?

I have had no trouble whatsoever with them in the sun but then again you are in a much warmer climate than I am.

Teresa I can't grow heucheras either. They either burn up and die OR dwindle away and die OR die over the winter OR just die. I LOVE the peachy colored ones.

@Frillylily I'm afraid I kill them, and love those colors too.
