About green tomatoes, are they of some sort of green varieties? Or are they just unripe tomatoes? I know this might be a stupid question, but I don't know much about growing veggies. Sticking tongue out

I do not know much about growing veggies---the green tomatoes are just unripe tomatoes. That was why I was shocked to see the price. The ripe ones (different kind) on stems were $1.49! I chose the real ripe ones (3) for 2 eggs, to make the Chinese Tomatoes and eggs dish--I love it, but I am not supposed to eat too many tomatoes, since they are in the "Nightshade is a family of plants that includes tomatoes, eggplant, potatoes, and peppers. Tobacco is also in the nightshade family. Nightshades are unique because they contain small amounts of alkaloids." not good for people with arthritis---Except for tobacco, I happen to like all of them: tomatoes, eggplant, potatoes AND peppers!

There are green when ripe tomatoes which are different from the unripe green ones of any variety that are picked before showing any color that are commonly used to make fried green tomatoes. Gives the fried green tomatoes that slightly sour taste.

@Newyorkrita Thanks for the info. Shows how much I know about tomatoes. With big trees of my neighbors, I have a lot of birds. Looking forward to harvest my 2 tomatoes, but one disappeared and this morning the other one is gone too. What is the name of the tomatoes for fried green tomatoes? I would like to plant them, because I do love fried green tomatoes, I used to get them from a farm in Falls Church, but the farm is gone now. The wife tried to manage it after her husband passed away, but it was too much for her. I think she sold it after 3 years. I really missed it, beautiful tomatoes, corns, hot and mild peppers, and then the home made pickles, and cut watermelons, so I do not have to buy a whole watermelon. They also had wonderful rose bushes that they planted near the entrance, pots, all kinds of herbs----I do not remember the name of it. Now it is all houses, a mix of single family an apartment buildings--a huge nursery---

Any slicer or beefstake (large) type tomatoes. Pick green before they show any blush and make fried green tomatoes.

Thank you, Rita and Francine. I asked about green tomatoes because one of mine got knocked off during the storm. It was a pretty big tomato, and I didn't want to through it away. I ended up using it in salad after seeing your replies Hurray!

Your veggies look fabulous as always, Rita. nodding

Salad? You ate a green unripe tomato in salad? It must have been pretty sour.

Cucumber season done for this year. All my cucumber vines have now been pulled and bagged up for the yard waste pickup. I have been working in stages and today was the last.

It was an excellent year with a massive harvest of cucumbers.

I got my order of row cover and pea seeds from Harris Seeds on Saturday, went out between showers to prep a few 10' rows for snap peas. Smiling

Yep, I have a trellis set up for regular Sugar Snap, and I also have Sugar Sprint (snap pea) and Avalanche (snow pea) for the two non-trellised rows.

I hope so! I routinely flub peas by waiting too late to plant them. This year, I got a trellis in early (that I plant to use for cucumbers), looked at it and thought, PEAS!

I'll also be testing out the row cover I got to keep diseases and pests off the cucumbers. Maybe it'll keep the bunnies out of the peas, too. I managed to buy "frost blanket" rather than "row cover," which is fine for some of my purposes. It says 80% light transmission (90% for "row cover"), but it's a pretty sunny area, should be fine.

It's 15' wide (!!) so it can cover both sides of the trellis and maybe another row beyond it. The main thing is figuring out a way to easily take it off and put it back on every couple of days for checking/harvesting.

This is a rigid metal trellis (set of 4 panels with posts between to secure them with zip ties), so I'm thinking I can use spring-loaded clips to hold the fabric to the top edge. And instead of a bunch of landscape staples at the bottom, maybe I can use a few branches to hold down the edge. We'll see!

Too late to plant collards here - 81 degrees today but Ira has me inspired! Strawberries starting to pink up. https://wineandcountrylife.com...

This is the earliest I've ever planted pepper starts, But the weather looks good for a week, the area is prepped, and I have lots of other things that'll need work. It gets them more self sufficient, too, fewer items on the deck to worry about.
Plant it and they will come.

Wow. Even the peppers that survived the Night of the Mouse aren't big enough to plant out yet.. and I have some I've just potted up from their seed starting tray! I don't plant peppers until nights are 50-ish and the soil is warm, generally at least a month from now.

Tomatoes, now, those are going out this week!

The Sugar Snap peas I planted along this trellis (under row cover) are about 6" tall now, and a few of the others have sprouted as well (1 row of snow peas, 1 row of shorter snap peas). Those seem more hit or miss, thinking maybe slugs or something similar didn't notice that I was "protecting" the area.
