Glad to see you back, Ric!

Yardenman, I have a Sedum Autumn Fire that is similar to the Autumn Joy that I really like. Sedums and hosta are always a nice addition.

I am back, too. Welcome Yardman. I am sure you will love it here. Great people and lots of good info and help. Between travel and my laptop being in the shop we are both going to take awhile to catch up.

Yup...was on ABC news this am. Very sad all around.
“Little girl, why are you doing this? You can’t save all these starfish. You can’t begin to make a difference!” After a few moments thought, she bent down, picked up another starfish & hurled it as far as she could into the ocean. Then she looked up at the man and replied, “Well, I made a difference to that one!” Be the change you wish to see in the world. http://www.stillsthatspeak.com...

Pisses me off they euthanized the bear. The woman just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time and got between a mother and her cubs. The mother bear did what nature has created her to do, protect her cubs. People.... Grumbling

When the story was on the national news a couple of days ago, they neglected to mention that she got between mama and the cubs. They made it sound like she was out for a stroll and was attacked by a stray bear.

But, this is sadly now the world we live in... report just enough to get people riled up and don't let those pesky facts get in the way of ratings.

Happy Thanksgiving All!

Yeah, they told half the story. Our media, especially on the national level, reports with an agenda instead of just reporting facts and letting the public make their own opinions based on the information. Rolling my eyes.

Interview video with lady about attack

Wonder if the three cubs were euthanized, too?

Evidently many people 'bite' on fake news sites and readily pass them on along with rumors via social media. Keeping my healthy scepticism alive and well and my 'spidey sense' tuned up. An awareness of my surroundings at all times by being grounded in the present moment has seen me avoid or avert a number of threatening dangers thus far. May we all creatures great and small be safe and sound in the days ahead.

Fight or flight instincts kick in pre thought.

Welcome Larry!!!

The cubs were deemed mature enough to live on their own and were released. (or so I read)

Thanks, Chantell, for letting us know.

About that bear... I talked to a friend at the Y (dance mom), and it was her neighbor a couple doors down that was attacked. Yes, she got between a mom and her cubs, but I think none were visible when the mama bear charged. The bear DID need to be euthanized and probably should have been either euthanized or transported sooner... she'd been injured a couple years back and was making an "easy living" by raiding trash cans etc.

A bear getting overly familiar with the suburbs is an incident waiting to happen. I'm guessing they were waiting for the cubs to mature, but I'm not sure that was the best idea, as they have learned from mom to forage in suburbia.

The responding officers didn't have a trank gun available, and letting the bear run around a housing area, angry and afraid, would have been a Very Bad Idea. As it was, sounds like it took them a while to take her down using service revolvers... and in the process she went looking for water and ripped the cover off my friend's hot tub... a foot away from the bedroom window where her sons were sleeping. Hmm, I see the news report said "wildlife biologists" euthanized her. Not entirely sure what happened, then.

But any way you look at it, a tragedy all the way around. I'm glad the woman survived... it was touch and go for a while, and she was in immense pain. She's got a long road to recovery.

hi everyone. I'm sorry to have been gone for so long. It' good to see people's names here and the active chat. Even though I have been away for a long time, I have thought about you all every time i go out to enjoy my yard.

I anted to let you all know that my father, who is 85, is now in the terminal stages of cancer. He and the rest of my family live in the Portland OR and Seattle areas. So it seems i have reached the time in our family life when i need to move back to the Pacific Northwest to be with family.

This is a huge move for me--we have lived in this house for almost 10 years and i have poured a lot into trying to make sure i have pretty blooms to look at. RIght now it's an especially gorgeous time of year--dogwood, redbud, azaleas, and lilac are all in bloom at the same time. I can't tell you how much i'll miss it. Sad

Anyway, i will need to sell the house and would be happiest if someone who is also a gardener could buy it so they can continue to improve what i've started, and not just chop things down and tear garden beds up willy-nilly. So I wanted to be sure to let people here know that my house will be up for sale sometime in the next couple months, just in case someone knows someone who knows someone who is looking to move to montgomery county in MD, and would appreciate already-started garden beds to be creative with and many flowering trees to enjoy. If I'm not able to find a gardener to purchase the house, then, i would at least like to make sure some of my beloved bloomers (at least the ones that can be moved) find good homes, and I couldn't think of any better folks for that than you all.
Catmint
