Cece, your house must be full of beautiful boquets of flowers! Quick question for you... can peonies be successfully grown in containers? I ask because our soil is so bad here, and I have this new peonie (with bud!), and I don't know where to plant it. But, I could put it in a pot...

Love Charley's hat!

Thanks for the new thread, Neil!

Thank you Brenda. I bet you can. My husbands got tomatoes in pots and if you remember Peonies love to be well drained. I'mgoing to plant one of mine in a raised bed to see what it will do. It sure isn't "doin" anything now. We have Japanese Maples in flower pots that are several years old and I have an Elm tree is is over 10 years old in a pot. I hope this helps. I don't think Cherie will mind my help.

Thanks, Charleen. I am doing a lot more container gardening here than I ever have. I'm very happy to say that my wisteria, which I got last year and it overwintered outside in a pot under a ton of snow, is quite happy and pushing out all kinds of leaves! A few other things don't seem to have fared so well, this winter I will move them to a less demanding spot and wrap the pots with burlap or otherwise mulch them. Now, I need to find another half whiskey barrel for my peony!

Check out Lowes or Home Depot. That is only fright I would have is your winters but if insulated with mulch I bet they would make it.
Just think-no bending over to pull weeds. Rolling on the floor laughing
Here is some of my tree babies.

Brenda I think Charleen is right. I have never grown peonies in containters but I don't see why they couldn't be. I do know that once they get established in a certain area they really despise being transplanted and will refuse to bloom for a couple years out of spite.

I had put a Mock Orange shrub in a whiskey barrel last year and then put a bunch of red creeping sedum in there. Forgot about them until oh I don't know I think it was January when I realized I didn't find a permanet home for the shrub.......this spring I cut the dead stuff off and thought lets see what happens.........didn't get much bigger than it was after I cut it down but it has blooms on it and the sedum has gone mad!!!!!!!!!!!I took a picture this morning of it but they're not loaded on the puter yet. When It is I'll post a pic.

We have major rain and hail. We do. This is awesome. I'm sitting out in the sun room and the sky lights have little balls of hail jumping around and it so pouring so hard and the the thunder! The bed right outside the sun room window is flooding bad. That has NEVER happened before!!!!!!!

Ed just came in. He disconnected the rain barrels because they were pouring over the top. He says 3 of my foundation plantings are flooded. It can stop now. It is doing more damage now than good. Oh no it has eased up and the water is slowly no rather quickly at that, draining. So glad I amend all new beds with manure compost and shredded leaves. Now maybe that long bed actually got some real water. Still raining but not as hard. I don't want to go look out my front window because I know all my beautiful peonies will be laying on the ground. That is only thing about peonies. They don't take to rain storms well and end up laying on the ground in the mud.

I can see from here the pond is near overflowing in spots. uh oh hope the fish knew to go to the bottom of the pond.

Guess I'll upload pics now...............

This is the larger Philadelphus that is only here now for its second season. I planted it a year ago this past April and the fellow who sold it to me said it probably wouldn't bloom for me last year. It bloomed in all its glory in June of last year and now...........what do ya think?

beginning of taking down the shed. Person in the picture is my brother in law and not my favorite person right now. He backed the trailer into my Josee Lilac. Good thing she's still pretty small.........

While they were getting rid of some stuff I dug her up and put her in a #10 container for safe keeping.
