I wrote an article recently for DG on Alnwick garden which if you haven't read you can see here..

I have a Facebook group for the garden too. I've bought a yearly ticket each year since I came back from the US as a friend of the garden and have tried to visit at least once a month. The garden was built and opened while I lived in Maine and two of my sister visited in 2002 when the rose garden was first planted. It was one of the first places they took me when I got back to Northumberland in Sept 2007.

My first visit this year was on Saturday Feb 6. I'd attended the funeral of my sister's mother in law on Friday and Sunday was the anniversary of my best friend's death, so I wanted to go somewhere where I could think about both of them.

After one of the longest cold spells in 30 years year the garden is a little behind for this time of year. There were hellebores and snowdrops in flower though, and some of the winter shrubs are blooming. It's always interesting to visit in winter though, when you can really appreciate the structure of the garden.

Here's a pic of the central pool in the Ornamental garden.

I have read Sues (kniphofia), article and it is excellent. I went to Alnwick last year on a guided tour, it really is a stunning place. However I went a bit late and many of the Roses were finished, which was a shame, but I may go back this year in June!
Thank you Sue fro this, I think many people are going to enjoy this and your article.
Regards.
Neil.

I have been to Alnick BG (before garden) The house is also interesting but I bet the gardens make it sensational.

And some double snowdrops. The wintersweet and Viburnum bodnantense were flowering too.

I went to the gardens at the end of April, lots of emerging growth and some flowers including this clematis.

Oh, that castle is so beautiful! I got to see Inverlochy Castle in Scotland (both the old one and the 'new' one), but those are the only true castles I've ever seen in person. I wish to see more...

Fortunately Northumberland has some wonderful castle and old churches - I'm so enjoying being back home!

Here's Warkworth, not too far south of Alnwick.

And another view from the river. Warkworth was the home of Harry Hotspur, of Shakespeare's 'Henry IV' fame.

I'm going to Alnwick garden today so will be interested so see how the plants are progressing.

I went to Alnwick garden yesterday as the Cherry Orchard is at its peak right now. For the first time the newly planted 200,000 'Mistress' tulips are in bloom. Absolutely stunning!

The macropetala clematis in the rose garden are also at their peak. This one is 'Markham's Pink'.

Fantastic pictures, Sue Thank you Does the garden have a 'pink' theme or is that just this yr.? 200, 000 tulips makes me tired just thinking of the planting work
