I've grown it for years. Have it planted in a part of the yard that can and does get pretty wet. It's in a spot where we just mow it in a semi circle under a Palatka Holly tree which gives it minimal shade in the middle of the day. But in the afternoon it's get's the brunt of full Florida sun. I've had recently rooted cuttings bloom in small pots. It never seems to be bothered by any thing here. Does bloom better when we are getting our usual rainfall, but still blooms ok when it's on the dry side. The Bee's Hummers and Butterflies all love it.
God gave us wings. He just called them horses

I have not ever tried pruning my salvias. They are growing as they wish. The pot is about 18” top diameter.

It might be more winter hardy grown in the real ground.

I have this plant in my garden. You need to keep it in check. The color of the flowers are lovely mixed with roses both in the garden and as cut flowers.
It has a tendency to flop, so I moved it towards the back of the bed, hoping that the roses will help keep it upright. I noticed today that some of the original plants decided to make an appearance towards the front of the bed. I am going to "prune" them when they reach about 20cm. I will let you know how they react to the treatment.

Okay, so I pruned them back when they reached 20cm. I felt sorry for them because the plants at the back of the border started making buds, and the front ones had their heads chopped off.. so I decided to let them grow and see what happens.
The front plants started flowering about three weeks after the plants that weren't pruned. They are more bushy, and doesn't flop much. Funny thing is, the plants only started flowering once the stems grew as tall as the plants' that weren't pruned.
I will definitely prune my plants in future. I looks so much tidier, and you end up with more flowers.

HamiltonSquare said:We have a well established colony of S. uliginosa. We shovel prune at the edges to keep the spread in check but we also keep it on the dryer side to inhibit it's rampant growth. We don't have rain to encourage it either.

@HamiltonSquare Leslieray,

I didn't see your beautiful photo in the S. uliginosa database. Here's the link and I hope you add it. Bog Sage (Salvia uliginosa)
