Why is it that the newest post is placed last (at the bottom)?

Hmmm, now I am wondering why that is...cuz most of us want to see the most recent replies....right? However, if you want to follow a conversation from the beginning it makes more since to have that first??

Even my non gardening forums are that way. I just click on "first unread"

Today I spent about 5 hours raking leaves. The maples FINALLY dropped most of the leaves. The village's last leaf pick up is Thursday. Now if the wind doesn't blow them back into my yard, I will be fine. I still have one section of yard to finish up, and the gutters to clean tomorrow - hopefully before it starts raining ~Jan

We had to remove our Maple this past Spring because it started dying a few years ago and it was time to get it out of the yard. We are waiting for a few of the neighbors Maples to drop. Our city use to have a last date for yard waste pickup and it was so frustrating because it would be before the Maples had dropped, it really never made sense to me...

Forty mile an hour winds today. I suspect my trees will be bare tomorrow. Went outside to take some pics and couldn't believe I'm still seeing flowers today.

The last of my leaves have been sucked up by my bagging mower and are buried in bloated raised garden beds..

I'm drying out a couple peanut butter jars to make a terrarium out of them. I needs to propagate some bald cypress.

Susan, I really like that last garden photograph. It looks like a serene and peaceful place to just sit and be.

I have 55 gal. metal barrels for burning too but I was just to tired by then to carry all the stuff that far. I would have dropped lots of weed and weedy grass seeds carrying it any farther so I just burned it right there. There was a rain predicted during the night too which helped me decide what to do. I still don't regret it. Since then I've burned lots of seed heads, etc. in the barrels.

We had some nice rains in the past month. We really needed them. When I first started planting garlic cloves I had to water just to get a hole to plant them in. By the time I had finished the soil was nice and malible. I still find clumps of garlic sprouts but I'm leaving them until spring when I plan to dig and divide then replant them. They should do fine, if not they can grow another season. If they multiply I'll divide those for transplanting and eating. I eat garlic as a primary veggie so lots of it isn't a problem for me.

I had roses blooming until a week or so ago. That was a real thrill to me. I only have one that isn't an everblooming rose. It's a sprouted cutting I found in a bag of leaves about 12 or 15 yrs ago. A tall single layer red. No fragrance. There were about a doz. such cuttings left from a pruning job and only 2 survived to grow into bushes. One died about 3 yrs ago. I think I'll try to bury a tip of a couple or 3 branches from it next year and see if I can get some starts from it.

I'm thinking about what to plant or move next spring. There are some heirloom peonies that I can move into a bed with some empty space so Holly won't have to keep mowing around them. I just moved an iris and have some rhizomes of LA iris Black Cock still to plant. There is a large bed of them out there but if I can get another bunch of them started elsewhere she can keep that area mowed too.

The magenta Spiderwort have spred way too much and need to be dug or sprayed to get them under control. They are smothering out lots of spring bulbs and getting way to close to some peonies and other plants I don't want to give up. I'll have starts in the spring if anyone is interested in them. They stay about 12" tall at the most.

GOD bless and keep each of you..

Maridell, how many maple sprouts would you like to have to replace the one you had to remove? You can run your lawn mower over the leaves and just let them rot down to enrich the soil or rake them up and put them into piles inside rings of find mesh wire, plastic bags, or tilled into the soil in the fall. Leaves contain all the nutrients the tree has taken from the earth which makes them the almost perfect soil amendment and conditioner. Worms love them.

Hi leaflady, after we cut down the tree we discussed if we should replace it. The tree had grown a lot in the last ten years and was turning my sun garden into a shade garden...so we decided to hold off on replacing it. Our main concern (besides loosing a lovely tree) was loosing the shade to our upstairs bedroom. We thought our bedroom was going to get really hot in the afternoons without that tree. As it turned out this was not the case at all. Plus our grass is looking a lot better. So we will not likely be replacing it. I did use some of the mulched leaves for winter insulation on some of my plants. I never gave much thought to the nutrients, you are so right!

On a side note, we had rain today with temps in the high 20's. Normally people know enough to drive more carefully but I guess it caught people by surprise. Lots of people getting into car accidents and falling on sidewalks and in parking lots. Sigh.

Sounding even better, but I'll have to settle for a glass of wine in front of the fireplace (electric fireplace - how romantic - ha, ha).
