And just think how much water would be needed if yours was out in the sun, Gina. My fiddle is out in the full sun but in the ground. My irrigation system seems to supply her with adequate water, but the ground won't dry out like potting soil does.

I'll have to go out and have my wife take a photo of me standing in front of my (in-the-ground) 25 yr. old fiddle leaf. She was removed from her 10+ yr. old pot (the pot had to be destroyed to get her root-ball out) and put in the yard at the end of October. She was 6.5'-7' tall at the time. She's now over 9' tall and she's in full sun. It took me about 5 mo. to acclimate her to sun. I think she likes it outside. Whistling

If our winters were reliably warm I would plant it. How cold has yours gotten and lived to tell the tale?

Of course, Gina, we have only lived in Vero Beach for 13 months, and the winter was mild here this year. It got down to 38 F one morning for a couple of hr. This old fiddle has always stayed potted and had to be brought inside in the fall, going back outside in the spring. Regardless of weather, she's staying outside now. She's already too large to get through a door, but I wouldn't dig her up regardless. She'll just have to tough it out in cold weather. Whistling

Here's what my momma fiddle looks like today. I'm 5'10" tall. She's at least 3' taller.

Wowsa!!!! Good looking there! Well, 38 would not be the least of it here, we did not actually freeze last winter here and the winter before was very mild, but I won't chance it! In the GH in winter!

Hi from England. I've been reading the past posts as was looking for the best type of compost/repotting soil to repot three large FLF's c10ft tall and two 6ft tall. I have had them in my home for 17 months now. I know I am not giving them the right support and want to change that, learning more. Starting with repotting Smiling Any help welcome. Can post photos etc if needed.

Welcome to NGA, @alanh888.

I've grown and propagated FLF for over 25 yr. I grow many 100's of tropicals and because I have so many plants, I make all my potting soils. I'm not sure what sort of nursery or big-box stores you have in England, and thus, don't know what you have access to. Here's a formulae for a simple potting mix, one that is organic yet well-draining:

1. 2 parts composed cow manure (something like Black Kow)
2. 1 part cypress mulch (cypress holds up longer)
3. 1 part coarse or super coarse perlite
4. A handful of 4-6 mo., slow release fertilizer, balanced formulae (I use Osmacote and Dynamite) per 5 gal. of mix

I've found that something like the above media will retain some moisture, will never get soggy, and drains well. In my experience, FLF do their best when you keep the potting soil slightly moist, which is true for most tropical plants.

Good luck and stay safe!

@alanh888 - Welcome! It would be helpful if you could post photos of your FLF's.

Why do you think you have not given them proper support? Whay do you want to start by repotting them? Do you have them inside or outside?
