You're making me so thankful for my native frogs. I've only seen two varieties here, both native. These little tree frogs are everywhere, though, and I have to warn people when I deliver flats of plants that they may have frogs hidden among them.

Years ago my mother used to say to me, she'd say, "In this world, Elwood, you must be" - she always called me Elwood - "In this world, Elwood, you must be oh so smart or oh so pleasant." Well, for years I was smart. I recommend pleasant. You may quote me.

Becky, I have just been reading up on the Cuban Treefrog. I think it is the first invasive treefrog ever.
It has everything to spread and invade: fecund breeder, lay eggs in a variety of places, eats anything that moves. Very sad. Once these things get in it, is often the end of several native animals.

Paul - Ahhhh! Too precious!

Glen - That be true! It is extremely sad for the native wildlife! And these Cuban Tree frogs are sooooo ugly, too! Can't find one good thing about them. (sigh)

I've been criticized for killing the Cuban TF. I hate them and they actually have a secretion on their skin that can cause itching to humans. I contacted the Univ. of Fl. about them and the biologist I talked to said they were working with a partner in Australia to come up with something to get rid of them. If I remember right he said it would be called "Stop Hop". Also, said it would be released in the US as soon as they got it made. That conversation was last year.
Was told to humanly kill them put them in a zip lock bag into freezer until they died and then dispose of them. Like heck, I told him I wasn't having that slimy critter in my freezer with food. They have such a distinct croak sound it's easy to hunt them at night with a large flash light as one gal on DG pond forum said she did. They will eat anything they can fit into their mouth and we had one here that was 6" around. YUK!!! Can't stand them.

Bonnie, do you have the disinfectant, Dettol, in America? A solution of this sprayed on them is quick and effective.

It is often used with cane toads.

Glen, never heard of it but I will certainly try to find it. Thanks so much.

Learned something new this week. A fellow ponder who has beautiful large fish lost 2 ponds of them overnight. 32 pairs of toads were breeding around her ponds and the toad sperm caused a spike in PH and she lost them. I had 7 pairs around my pond and didn't pay any attention to them but guess I should have. I had no problems with them though. We had a very hard rain and that brought them all out and ready to breed. Their racket that morning woke me up which is very unusual. Gal who lost fish was a long time experienced ponder and did all precautions right for spring startup. She said she had never heard of it before. Neither had I.

I found some strings of frog eggs in my larger pond and a Cuban Tree Frog swam away from them so I immediately netted them out with my finest net. I have 3 nets for different purposes and 1 net got them out thank heavens.

Learn something new every day. Happy ponding all.
Bonnie
