As I started collecting succulents in the early 80's, I learned the Latin names and preferred them over common names. I found a common name was given to different genus and species. That could cause disappointments when you are wanting a specific plant.
While searching for unusual plants, I fell in love with caudiciforms, fat plants that grow a body. Most of these plants have no common name and I like it that way. I buy my plants by Latin names only. Of course there is the occasional misidentified plant, but then there is the fun of finding the correct Latin name.
When you study the Latin names you will find that sometimes the name includes characteristics of the plant, the location or the person who found it or named the plant. I think Latin names are the pretty as well.
