My memory of -60 was that you simply avoided going out in it. It did not allow for the slightest mistake, personally or automotively. I walked to the bus stop my last year of college in -55 but I was warmly dress in many layers. Worse thing was my mascara melted down my face.
In class we would peel the layers down to the long johns or sweats around our waists then rebundle for the walk between classes. The heavier layers were put in the lockers til the walk home. Never got cold.
Now, -20 to -40. That is when the stupids start. You think it isn't as bad so you underdress and fingers and toes and such can really get cold. Especially sitting on a bench waiting for a bus.
Glad to be out of that. Anchorage is pretty temperate to us. Not very often do we see -20 or lower down here. Suits me fine. I put in my time (37 years ) in Fairbanks.
