I hope that volcano is not about to blow ash all over.
I remember when Mount St. Helen in Washington blew.
It was cloudy and dismal for weeks.

My memory of -60 was that you simply avoided going out in it. It did not allow for the slightest mistake, personally or automotively. I walked to the bus stop my last year of college in -55 but I was warmly dress in many layers. Worse thing was my mascara melted down my face. Rolling on the floor laughing In class we would peel the layers down to the long johns or sweats around our waists then rebundle for the walk between classes. The heavier layers were put in the lockers til the walk home. Never got cold.

Now, -20 to -40. That is when the stupids start. You think it isn't as bad so you underdress and fingers and toes and such can really get cold. Especially sitting on a bench waiting for a bus.

Glad to be out of that. Anchorage is pretty temperate to us. Not very often do we see -20 or lower down here. Suits me fine. I put in my time (37 years ) in Fairbanks.

Mary, what kind of temps are you having now ? -- I keep hearing on the Weather Channel that Alaska is warmer than the southern states!

Apparently so. We have no snow and running in the 20's above. Gets up to the 30's during the day. Just a light frost each morning on ground and roads. Still have to watch for slippery driving. Mostly clear skies. That is Anchorage. Fairbanks, in the interior, is running teens at night and 20's during the day. Still no snow which is bad for them as underground utilities risk freezing.

Our temps are nearly identical to yours (for the moment, anyway) -- went down to 20 last night, and our thermometer just went up to 32.

Slippery driving and slippery walking! We went out for a pizza last night and DH pulled into a spot and had nice dry pavement on his side -- when I went to step out there was just glare ice (and of course I was wearing my "tennis shoes," not very good on ice). Had to make him get back into the car and move it to a more user-friendly location, since I figured it was way too early in the winter to break my neck! Rolling my eyes.

Yesterday I picked up a load of straw bales to stack along the side of the house where the laundry pipes are, since they'll freeze when we have low 'teens. Just in time it seems, as we're forecast to hit those tomorrow night. Light snow falling prettily right now, and I'm very happy to be indoors packaging seeds and watching it from the windows. Smiling

Oh boy. Hilarious! Have I been there. I actually slid partially under the car once. Wasn't watching where I was stepping and was on a slight slope. Didn't hurt myself but felt like a fool. I wear ice grippers on both feet when I walk woody, even when it appears to be just snow. Good traction. I cannot afford any more injuries.

My dream right now is to be able to enjoy a cup of coffee and toast while looking at snow coming down so thick I can hardly see through it. Sticking tongue out

Yes, I suppose so. I used to love to walk in a hard snowfall in Fairbanks. Especially in the woods. It was so quiet and still. Very peaceful. Sorrels and a parka with warm mittens made it more enjoyable.

I agree

Well, until things warm up and the snow on the trees starts crashing down on your head... Hilarious!

Hilarious! Yep, I do recall that happening on an occasion or two when we lived in Indiana and Colorado. Part of why my feet are firmly rooted to Texas ground.

Go ahead and laugh: our weathercasters have been all over the 'chance' of snow falling last night. For three days, that possibility was the highlight of their broadcasts. Accumulations of...drumroll, please...up to 1/2 inch! Hilarious! Hilarious! Hilarious! Looks like we got about 1/4 inch at my house. The reason it has been such big news--other than the fact that it is ALWAYS big news when it snows, here--is that it is only the eighth time since record keeping began in 1895 that we have had a measurable amount of snow in November. Another part of why this Yankee-born's feet are firmly rooted to Texas ground. Smiling
