Pam, I look on there to find funny garden signs too. My daughters are artsy and they got me into looking thru the site.

You are into quilting? I am working on a pinwheel for my daughter that got married this year. I have also painted a 4x4 barn quilt in the Kentucky Star pattern.

Well, I dont know if Im into quilting ,..or fabric stashing Whistling . I do love my fabric.
As well as I know the LA, I also love the online fabric shopping nodding Cash is not plentiful, so as in daylilies, I do alot of looking before buying. Makes it seem like your getting more than you really are Rolling my eyes.

I cant stop bidding on the LA...I dont know what to do. After the auctions Ive bid on are over,..thats IT. As soon as your done tho,...Fred puts on..Warm Up The Bus....or Mark S. puts on Lillians Crazy Arms, or you find Gossard 2014 intos for 25 bucks. The seeds are just still full of goodies too, but Ive reached enough for three years...so I did stop there. I cant really plant more than 60-100 a year. I get about 5 or 6 of those to keep cuz I like them.

I need to disable my Want List on the Lily Auction. I have won some more nice seed crosses. I am excited about getting some new seeds to play with this Spring.

Glen, I am curious, does Australia have a AHS or something similar. Local clubs?

No excuse Glen....most all ship to you nodding

Last week were the best deals Ive seen on the LA this year. I noticed some did not relist everything. Maybe they are waiting till after thanksgiving. I had to walk away from the computer, because I was about to buy stuff just because it was a great deal...not cuz I really wanted it.

That is OK with clothes or fabric or kitchen gadgets, but these plants are too much work. I wanna really like it.

They do ship here, Pam, but the government charges and forms are not easy or cheap. I hear tales of the stress waiting to see if all the paperwork is done correctly; freaking out at the length of the wait; and, when they do arrive, the yellow-white, straggly and compressed leaves of the infirmed and interned fans.

Yes, there are, Teresa. I subscribe to the Daylily Robin. There quite a few Americans on it, too. I think I am the youngest there at 63 (but don't quote me). So many people got disheartened when rust hit and they just stopped doing daylilies. The clubs collapsed too. In the Australian States where it hasn't arrived yet, there is great trepidation and people just say they will stop if rust hits. No one is sure if any clubs are still operating in Queensland (my State). Daylilies once were big here with many important breeders. There is still one full-time nursery.

I try to put across to the venerable breeders that I got into daylilies without realising what this rust stuff was and that I am really post-apocalyptic and I don't know any better. And, believe it or not, I am having the time of my life. I get exasperated sometimes with people's sadness over what was lost. I suppose I am lucky I am so positioned. But goodness, it must have hit bad in the eastern Australian States.

Rust has been here in the US since around 2001. The southernmost areas deal with it constantly and those who live in zones 6 and lower may get it, but it usually will die out in winter. Some southern growers became discouraged and gave up growing daylilies completely. Not sure where the idea came from that it hasn't arrived in the US!

I think he was referring to Australian states other than the state of Queensland, not to the U.S. At least that's how I read the post. I wonder if I'll see rust here. I'm actually thinking it may be like leaf spot on bearded iris - bad in the years when the conditions are right and not seen in other seasons. Not a lot of daylilies grown in my area of Texas. Too dry, probably, and possibly too hot and windy in combination with the dryness. They certainly are grown east and south of my part of the state.

I wasn't going to start any seeds till January... but one cross ( Tal of Gascone x Born to be Wild) decided to start sprouting a couple weeks back. They should be alright as long as I have them in a window or give them some artificial light over the winter... shouldn't they? Usually I only have them inside for a couple months head start.

Yes, thanks Donald, that is correct. Australia has six States and several territories.

I edited that message to be less ambiguous.

Yes, the seeds Homeland Security seized were purchased for my rust resistant daylily project.

We need to breed more rust resistant daylilies if we expect regular folks to get involved.

I got rust this year from plants that I received out of FL during the spring. My future plan is if I am buying from those states that are prone to rust I am going to have mine ship in the fall just in time for them to settle in. For this reason all my plant foliage will be removed this fall and sent to the local compost. I want nothing lying in wait. It's bad enough to have to deal with weeds. It wasn't so bad when the girls were here to help out with the garden chores.

In the fall, the plants are also much less likely to have any active rust, as the temps. will have been to high. I hate it, just have to deal with it. Im going out later this morning to spray, just because its been so humid and warm here the last few days. With any luck, the one night freeze got any. Ive heard other people say this, and Im finding it true. Plants in the ground, not pots are less prone to it and healthy large plants seem to stave it off pretty well.

Mike, I am doing the same thing. I haven't had rust, but I have stopped bidding on plants from FL that will be shipped in the Spring. One less headache is a good thing.

Everyone have a blessed Thanksgiving!
