Time to Winter Sow Your Seeds

By valleylynn

Have you tried winter sowing vegetable and ornamental plant seeds? If not, give it a try this winter. Many seeds, including tomato seeds and your favorite perennial seeds, do unbelievably well using this method.

Great post Lynn. This will be my first time at winter sowing and I cant wait to try it! I have so many native perennial seeds and this would give me such a great jump start for sales in late Spring, as I started a native plant nursery this year.

Hi Lori. I am glad it might be of some help to you. It really is as easy as this short article says.
What growing zone are you in?

As impossible as it sounds, WS does work! I was so skeptical when I tried it several years ago and it is now the only method I use.
I also didn't trust that it would work with tomatoes, but it does! Wow, wow, wow!!!

Thank you, Lynn, for the article. I had lost my original instructions from the DG site and I have printed yours out just as a reminder.

Angie, I am so glad to hear that you gave it a try. I know when I tried it the first time I was amazed. I couldn't believe it was that simple.
I have since done sempervivum seed from crosses I have made. Hoping for a new/special semp that is deserving of a name.

I have ordered some new tomato varieties to try this year in addition to my old standbys and I'm wondering if it works with
cucumbers. What veggies have you tried and had good results with? I have limited garden space for veggies, so I don't do
a big garden, but I'll be working many of them in among my flowers.

Others I've told about this method were as skeptical as I was originally, but those who tried it are converts!

I have not tried peppers, but did start cucumbers in the spring using the winter sow method. I really got a head start on them by doing this. Seems the milk jugs kept the soil and plants warm enough until all danger of frost was past.
Things like: kale, chard, peas, collards did wonderful. Some of the squash should work. How many times have you found squash growing in the compost in the garden bed?
Snow peas, spinach, lettuces, asparagus, peas, kohlrabi, red cabbage and pak choi.

I have already sown tomatoes `Rose' and `Black from Tula' but lots more to do. Spent a pleasant Sunday afternoon
sowing them, along with some salvias, hostas, gaillardia, aquilegia, rhubarb `Victoria' to name a few. So many seeds
and so little time!
