mandolls,
Thanks, 1000 seeds at $4.99 per pack comes to .005 per seed, now that is more like it. I do understand these are not the same Zinnia seeds and the new varieties cost more, I just did not realize they were 50 times more.

Seedfork, maybe you should consider doing the Piggy Seed Swap next year. It's a good way to get a variety of seeds. Great bunch of people there too, everyone wants to share everything! We just finished this year but if you're interested, you can check it out for next year.

I do the bulk of my seed buying from Pine Tree. They are sometimes half the price of other companies. Then I fill in special items from other companies.

I get a lot of my seeds from Pinetree as well... the packets generally have plenty of seed for my needs, their prices seem more reasonable than some of the "flashier" companies, and I've always had good luck with germination from their seed.

Hmmm, never heard of "Outside Pride" -- must check that one out!! Big Grin

Seedfork, I totally agree with Arlene about the Piggy Swap -- this was my first year, although I've thought about it pretty much every year, and it was a lot of fun on top of a chance to get lots of seeds. If you click on the link Arlene gave, you can check out the databases that each member set up and see what kinds of things were offered -- it really is everything and anything! And did I mention it was a lot of fun ?? Hilarious!

I've been doing a complete inventory of all the seeds I have left over, seeds I've saved myself, and seeds that I have coming from the Piggy Swap -- and have no idea where I'm going to find room for everything that I want to plant... might have to rent a community garden plot this year to supplement my garden space !!

I took a look at Pinetree this morning. They do seem like a good choice for a lot of what I look for. I have everything ordered for this year, but I'll remember them for next year.

And everyone is invited to check out the seed swap for next year. Click the link above and go to the Database listing on the right side of the page. Check out all of the participant's databases and see just how much and how varied the offers are!

I ordered Kale coalition from Adaptive Seeds. It is a mixture with which they let 17 different Kales cross. Very rare and unique to be sure! They got many from Europe.

Reid (or anyone else, for that matter), do you have any advice for getting kale to germinate?? I seem to be able to grow everything but kale, for some reason -- I can plant a whole packet of seed and maybe get 2 plants !

I will totally second Arlene's post about the Piggy Seed Swap -- this was my first year and it was an absolute blast! One of the best parts is that you don't have to send out a bunch of individual swaps, you just send everything to one person at the end, and then all the stuff that you requested comes to you. Just plan to dig up a couple more garden areas, because you're not going to know what the heck to do with everything!! Thumbs up

I planted it directly in the garden on Easter last year. I also did done winter sowing of kale with success. It is a bit tricky inside. Will keep posted.

Thanks, Reid -- I'm winter sowing a bunch of stuff this year and will add kale to the list! Thumbs up
